Ravens/49'ers

Let's get some Super Bowl Game match up talk going. :gorave:

To get things started I'll put up a few observations.

The 49'ers pass rush has disappeared. The Ravens beastly O line has appeared. Joe will have all day to throw.

The Ravens win if Joe plays like he has in the playoffs. I think he will.

Suddenly Kaepernick discovered that he has a TE who is pretty good...damn good. UMD Veron Davis. They were using him to block on the runs all season...then they woke up. He's big, fast, physical and has good hands. He's a playmaker. The Ravens have to limit him.

If it comes down to field goals...and it could...here comes Akers who "Cundiff's" every game.

I worry about the 49'ers run game the most. They had over 400 yards rushing in the playoffs....so did Rice and Pierce.

Anyway...can the Ravens stop the run and can they run on the 49'ers which everybody finds hard to do.

Finally...both teams are physical, smashmouth football teams...this will be like playing the Steelers.

The Ravens like the Dome...

Boldin is in for a huge day. If there is a weakness on the Niners D it is the corners. Tarrell Brown and Carlos Rodgers were absolutely abused by Roddy White and Julio Jones. Boldin is a big physical receiver who has seemed to regain his elite level of play since Caldwell has took over as OC. Boldin is too physical for both of these corners and Torrey Smith is going to attract a lot of attention with safety help. Pitta and Boldin should kill it underneath.

On defense the Niners are extremely thin at receiver. It's Michael Crabtree and tight-ends Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker pretty much as the #2 and 3 guys. Moss is a shell of his former self. I feel confident that our corners can man-up on the receivers, and have Ed Reed hovering the middle of the field to neutralize Davis. If we can stop the run this game is over IMO.

What I'm scared of: we will not run the ball on the Niners heads up. If we run the ball, it will have to be like last week against the Pats. Get the defense on there heels with the pass game and be smart with the run game. The Niners front seven is rock solid, we do no good running into a brick wall. Our runs have to be calculated attacks like the second half of last week.

I am scared of Kaepernick's ability. If we cannot stop the run then Kap is going to have a field day. The bottom line here is Kap has eight career starts. Our defense is at its best making uncomfortable situations for opposing QB's. if we can confuse Luck, Brady, and Manning, then I am sure we will have an awesome gameplan set up for Kap. With the combined knowledge and film study skills of Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, and Dean Pees, I think our gameplan is going to win this game.

I do not think this will be a close game. I think this game will be won at the line of scrimmage and the team that wins that battle will have a commanding win. Lets hope it's us that wins this battle.

SF posted a shutout against the Falcons in the second half despite Roddy White and Julio Jones.

Half time adjustments strike me as very important, both on offense and defense.

Yup and the Ravens pitched a shutout in the 2nd half against the #1 offense in the NFL...Our d has really put it together this last month and a half.

Mr Cleet, I am not concerned obout Kaspernickels running ability, its been pointed out and wrongfully too, that we lost to Vick & RG-3. I'd like to think that if we had the seasoned officials in Philly we would have won that game. Also we were not beat by RG-3, we lost the game when we took RG-3 out and the Skids replaced him with someone we had no scouting report on.I welcome Kaspernickel to attempt to run on our D, he will get the beating of his life...Hey SB participant money isnt too shabby :)

One of the huge keys will be the ability of the Ravens to run the ball.

That runs right into the 49'ers strength...stopping the run.

If the Ravens can't run, then the 49er can stay in their base defense. The safeties will stay deep and make it hard on Joe. The front 4 can tee off on him.

I don't see the 49'ers changing their defense from what has been successfull all year.

Now...the 49'ers had the #4 rush D.

Denver had the #3 rush D and Rice ran for 131 on them.

We were not beat by RG3, but we were beat by Alfred Morris and the Skins run game because we didn't know who to tackle at the line of scrimmage. On the plus side, no Suggs, no Ellerbe, no Ray in that game...we should have a much better showing.

I am hopeful because of the Ray and Suggs factors especially as well. As I've said before, Suggs especially is so valuable because of his ability to both rush the QB and contain the run, including a QB run. With Suggs locking down one side, I believe we can at least control Kaepernick's ability to run around the outside.

Similarly, I am not thrilled with Ray's performances - he's not he same guy physically and misses his angles sometimes - but I am confident in his brain. I think he can read the plays well enough to put himself in position for a play. It might be a few yards downfield, but the big play is scarier. And with Suggs holding one half, it gives Ray a bit less to have to worry about.

I think Ray has started to play more off the line of scrimmage to compensate for his lack of speed. That's ok as long as he prevents a big run from Kapernick or LeMichael james. Our philosophy all year has been no big plays. If we can do that and force Kapernick to have to make 12+ play drives in order to reach the redzone, it increases the chance of a kid making a mistake in what is only his 9th or 10th start.

2 Huge Keys for the Ravens D:

I don't think the Ravens can cover Vernon Davis.

If he makes big plays...and he goes deep...that will hamper the Ravens ability to defend the run which is the biggest key to the game.

After thinking about this all week, I'm reaching the conclusion that this will be one more very tough game for the Ravens. The 49'ers have a load of offensive weapons and an excellent offensive line. Their defense ranks high too.

But, the Ravens have that certain 'something', that 'team of destiny' feeling that will serve them well. I'm picking the Ravens.

But I didn't think we would win the last 3 games either so I don't really trust my predicting skills!

Well my cockiness side is outweighing my logical side.

This is exactly why I hate 2 weeks between the AFCCG and the Super Bowl..first we have that dike bitch of Welker with her comments, then theres Joe, then theres this PED report..

I agree with Preston here, the outside wants to stick a stick in the hornets nest, they better be prepared for a blow out, then they will claim how boring the SB game was because of the Ravens onslaught.

San Fran will not stop Joe, Rice, Q, Torrey, Pitta, Jones, Pierce..

A Ray of Hope....

But I'm not sure the San Francisco defense can do its part. In the last five games, here's what the Niners defense -- the one we all talk about as being so dominant -- has put on the board:

Points allowed per game: 28.8.

Yards allowed per game: 391.4.

Sacks per game: 1.6.

Sacks by Aldon Smith and Justin Smith: 0.

So that's five ignominious weeks for a proud defense. And if we eliminate the Brian Hoyer start for toothless Arizona in the season finale, we're talking about a defense giving up 32 points a game over four games. And that, folks, can't be just wiped away under the gauzy storylines of a Super Bowl. Especially when that defense is going against a quarterback, Joe Flacco, who, in his last five games, hasn't thrown an interception.

I just re-watched the second half of the Niners' win at New England in Week 15. The 19-minute destruction of the San Francisco defense by Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady was so thorough, so stunning. And I know -- Tom Brady makes lots of teams look bad. But touchdown drives of 73, 86, 66 and 92 yards in 19 minutes? Brady no-huddled on at least half the snaps, and that's become more and more of a Flacco staple since Jim Caldwell replaced Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator. Brady owned the Niners linebacker underneath, taking an endless string of nine yards here, seven there. Brady hit Brandon Lloyd over the top of Chris Culliver. Brady piled up 317 yards in a little more than a quarter, and never looked more in control of a game than he did for those 19 minutes. The next week, Russell Wilson put up 42 points on the Niners. And in the playoffs, Green Bay and Atlanta put up 829 yards. The only bright light for San Francisco was recovering in the second half of the NFC title game and shutting out the Falcons -- but imagine how things might have been different if Matt Ryan saw a wide-open Tony Gonzalez streaking for the end zone on the potential last-minute game-winning drive.
