No PT is ever guaranteed. I just think a kid should be able to finish his degree and not get cut. Hell if the program wants to move on and is willing to let the scholarship turn into something other than athletic but they are off the team I am fine with that.

From what I know it was rough scripted. There was a general A to B to C movement in the plan. Actual lines were in general fluid. At one point he told the kid to write down what he talked to a girl about and bring it next yr. He worked those ideas into the script. Also he was able to ID big events at the moment that are touchstones. Early in the film Hawke is bowling with the kids. He is watching the siege of Fallujah. He is talking about how the war is a sham. The kids are small so there is no way to go back later to refilm it. Also there are a few people you are introduced to and then they go on there way. When the son graduates from HS you see a few of them at his graduation party and they are older too. It is really subtly done. I think the meaning is trying to show the organic growth of this family.
