  1. Updatye! Still up in the air....

Cleaning out his locker Monday, wide receiver Derrick Mason gave the impression that he's conflicted on whether to return or retire.

"It’s still up in the air now," Mason said. "Right now, it’s one of those situations where you go home and think about it and you weigh the pros and the cons. If the pros outweigh the cons, that’s how you make your decision."

The interview with Mason got off to a bizarre start. Without being asked a question, Mason arrived at his locker and told reporters, "I’m done. I’m going to say it again, 'This is it.' I had a lot of fun. We had a good roll this year. We had a lot of ups and a lot of downs. Through it all, I think we stayed together as a team and played as a team."

  2. King's reliable...this is not good.

The negotiations for a new labor agreement couldn't be going any worse.

If the past few days, I've spoken to sources on both sides of the labor talks, and I've come to the conclusion that it'll be an upset if there isn't a work stoppage that either delays or cancels the 2011 season. Many of us in the media have speculated about the chances for a lockout and predicted one is coming, but the total lack of progress over the nut issue in 11 bargaining sessions tells me unless there's a sea-change by one side or the other, you'd better savor the 2010 season because it could be the last football we see for a while.

At the core of the problem is ownership's demand for players to bear an equal part of the cost for stadium construction, debt service and upkeep -- and the players saying it's not their problem. In NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith's recent e-mail to player representatives, he startled player leaders by saying ownership wanted to cut player compensation by 18 percent per year in the new CBA.

I thought the 18 percent number might be an exaggeration, a scare tactic to get players' attention. It's not. The owners, one management source said, have asked that the players' pool of revenue against which the salary cap is calculated be reduced by 18 percent.

  3. Willett's saying that he thinks it's 70/30 that Ed will retire from the way Ed sounds. He said Ed was in the locker room for about 20 minutes and didn't talk to the media. He grabbed his stuff and ran.

    He's Peter Kings take...

I really hope Ed Reed doesn't retire.

You want to see great players make great plays in big games like these. Well, I do anyway. Reed had the most compelling three minutes any player has had in a while against the Colts on Saturday night. In the span of six plays on the same drive in the third quarter (technically, they are two different drives because of the change of possession and then the change back within seconds), Reed twice intercepted Peyton Manning. The first pick he fumbled back to the Colts. The second interception was negated because of a pass-interference call against nickel back Corey Ivy and robbed the Ravens of their last chance to get back in the game.

Reed, 31, said after the game a nerve impingement in his neck may force him to retire. "You'll know soon enough,'' he said. That would be sad for football, because this is the best ball-hawking safety of our time (maybe ever), and the most instinctive defensive back of this era. Intercepting Manning twice in a span of six plays ... that's absolutely stunning. And it's no fluke.

  4. Well, I don't trust anything Mason says at this point... or anyone, really. If they had mentioned it during the season or pre-season, likeJ Jamal, then sure. But this is standard rushing to a decision stuff... and I bet Mason flip-flops a bit (again)

    You're right dc.

Mason did say yesterday that he's healthy and his family is in Baltimore.

I think it's the mental grind and all the work he knows he will have to put in to play up to his standards that has him in this frame of mind....that and the huge disappointment in being knocked out of the playoffs.

  5.

Cant argue with him. My reactions:

    * Our D is only missing a bonafide tandem at CB, perhaps S (if Reed retires)

    * Our D is still a strength, its just more balanced now - strong D , strong O

    * Equally amazed by our success w/o playmaker

    * Ozzie - get the playmaker - I dont care : Vincent jackson, Miles Austin, just get em !

This needs to be a productive offseason - more so than in the past.

I'm on the same page as you varaven.

Without Revis Rex's D is no better than the Ravens. The Ravens need solid, dependable corners. I really believe it would have been a different story if Webb played. Now I wonder if he can come back just as strong to help out next season.

Ray Rice is a Playmaker...so is Flacco if he had receivers (other than Mason). Webb...Foxworth can be. Reed is a playmaker.

    The lines are solid.

This team has a solid core to build around....but they have to get the additional pieces to make this an elite team. You can bet the rest of the AFC and AFC North will improve this off season.

Harbaugh and his coaches got all they could out of what they had...amazing they got this far.

  6. I heard this on the radio...Casey Willet reporting from the Palace said Derrick said he's done.

I was hoping he'd come back but we all saw this comming...I guess.

The Ravens now have 0 wide receivers.

  7. 3 straight games the Colts have held us without a TD..Totally unacceptable, their D is not that dam good.

They make them look like they have the #1 D in the NFL.

Flacco, Cam and the Ravens O can't successfully attack the 2 Deep Cover 2 D.

It's like the Ravens O sees the Colts D and gets one massive brain fart that expresses itself in penalties, dropped passes and turnovers.

  8. Glad that Mexico's team got knocked out and I wasn't shocked at the Chargers losing. I thought if the Ravens could get by Indy then they'd be in the SB. They just weren't good enough.

I'll pull for Rex and the AFC all the way.

Once again we saw what a very good D can do to an excellent O in the playoffs and that was refreshing. I don't want to see a league full of Saints/Packers games with no D evident...no competative balance. At least have teams who can put up a fight to stop teams from scoring.

There should be 3 phases to the game: offense, defense and special teams....not one.

  9. Telling stat...

    FLACCO UNDER PRESSURE

Indianapolis decided to bring extra pass rushers against Joe Flacco and Baltimore struggled to pick up the pressure.

Category... 4 or Fewer... 5 or More

    Comp-Att..... 17-25.......... 3-10

    Yards.......... 144............ 45

    TD-Int......... 0-1........... 0-1

    Sacks ............0............. 1

    Passer Rtg.... 66.1........... 6.3

  10. Mason's on the fence too...

I got some months to think about it," Mason said. "I’m not in a rush. If I decide to play, obviously this would be a place that I’ll come back to. All the pieces are in place. But I have to think about my two little ones [children]."

"Mentally and emotionally is the toughest part," Mason said candidly. "Physically, I think I’ve proven that I haven’t slowed down. That is not a worry to me. I’ve been blessed enough to stay healthy.

"So it’s all about if I want to play, if mentally I’m still in it to play another year, or two, or three -- whatever it may be. So it’s something that I’ll evaluate."

It would be great to have Mason back as a #2 if the Ravens had a field stretching #1.

  11. ER: "What are your thoughts on this topic Mike?"

    27208489-21155418.jpg

Second-year quarterback Joe Flacco will take most of the criticism for the Ravens' lackluster passing game in last night's loss to Indianapolis, but it's not all his fault. Flacco, though, does have to step up his game, and hasn't played well enough to carry the team in two straight postseason appearances.

But the Ravens also need to find him two top quality receivers, or at least a legitimate No. 1 if they re-sign Derrick Mason. It's embarrassing watching the Ravens run a hurry-up offense with Flacco throwing short passes to running back Ray Rice and tight end Todd Heap.

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron also has to come up with a better passing scheme. The Ravens fail to use the entire field, and stay with safe passes to the outside.

Meanwhile, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning was throwing passes over the middle and outside, and the Colts ran numerous combination routs, especially on crossing patterns. The Colts have an elite passing attack while the Ravens, from the quarterback to the coordinator, are pretty vanilla.

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2010/01/spread_the_blame_around_for_ravens_offensive_woes.html

    Totally agree with him.

I hope year 3 (2010) sees Joe and the passing game take that next step.

  12. 4 turnovers.

    6 dropped passes.

7 penalties...and these were the killers because they negated a ton of yardage. Parmele's great return would have yielded great field position and a momentum swing. Reeds INT same thing.

In a playoff game on the road?!

    Forget it.

  13. 1. Absolutely "No!"...he made the defensive plays today. Ed may retire due to his injuries.

    2. Free Agency

    3. Gaither's good but he's hurt. I say they keep Gaither at LT because he cannot play RT. This way you have your 2 best tackles on the field.

  14. We've had this topic every off season since Jackson and Alexander...that's '96 and '97. The receiving position has been weak and especially weak this year. They are so bad that second unit guys have no problem shutting them down.

But Joe has got to do better irregardless.

3 points today. No excuse. He has yet to step up and win games when he has to carry the team. He is not matching the high caliber QB's this Ravens team is facing.

He is not even making 2-3 big plays a game. He's reading and reacting too slow, telegraphs throws and only looks at part of the field.
