The Baltimore Ravens decided to cancel their final tune-up practice before the official start of training camp to take a field trip. On the day when veterans reported, coach John Harbaugh took the quarterbacks and rookies on a short drive up to Gettysburg, Pa., to visit the Civil War battlefields and gain a history lesson.

“What I got from it is what it takes to win a battle, to overcome adversity and keeping the big picture in mind," rookie linebacker Arthur Brown told the team's official website. "Keeping the focus on the common goal and achieving that goal.”

It's not a surprise that Harbaugh chose a different route. He's a history buff who frequently quotes famous generals and leaders. A year ago, when asked about that infamous handshake between his brother and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, John Harbaugh used a Civil War reference, saying: “I don't think there's been so much attention paid to a handshake since Grant and Lee shook hands at Appomattox."

On Thursday, it's back to work for the Ravens, who have their first full-team practice of training camp. The focus won't be learning about history. It will be about repeating it.

Cool idea to build team unity by visiting Gettysburg.

Sounds like a great idea to me, why not take the team to a real battle field before they step on their own.

As a history buff I appreciate Harbs showing the players the connection between history and modern sports.

The Baltimore Ravens will take to the practice fields for the first full-team practice of training camp on Thursday after veterans reported for duty on Wednesday.

But that didn’t stop head coach John Harbaugh from getting a jump-start on team-building activities for the defending Super Bowl champions. According to the team’s official website, Harbaugh cancelled practice for the team’s rookie class Wednesday and took them on a field trip to the battlefields of Gettysburg.

In addition to the rookies, a handful of veterans – including quarterback Joe Flacco - came along for the ride.

They were led on a tour of the site by a handful of Gettysburg historians and six members of the Maryland Army National Guard who relayed the stories of the famous battle to the players.

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg was earlier this month. The battle took place over three days from July 1-3, 1863.
