The team announced that they have released four players in addition to signing Kafka. Tackle Gabe Carimi...

Carimi, a first-round pick by the Bears in 2011, was traded to the Bucs for a 2014 sixth-round pick before last season. He saw action in 14 games for the Bucs and made three starts, but doesn’t appear that Lovie Smith was interested in giving another chance to a player whose struggles were part of overall offensive line issues that helped grease the skids for Smith’s firing in Chicago.

Maybe they can fix him. He was so good in school.

They couldn't fix Oher, or anyone on the line, not sure they can fix him, if he can be fixed. He may very well be one of those players who are just very good in college but not good enough for the NFL.

He's cheap for a reason... he's bad

as for as risk/reward.... Shipley was a low risk pickup until KO went down and now this bum was our starting LG

Exactly. Hopefully the Ravens have learned to avoid the bargain basement deals when it comes to the OL.

Good point.

They don't need projects. They need players. Big, nasty road grading MoFo's.

He has to come back really cheap.

Unfortunately, Oher looks like the best of a really bad lot when stacked up against other FA's on the market. What should be of concern is Eugene Monroe, who stands to get overpaid on his next contract because of the sparcity of talent at his position. Don't think the Ravens will go out on a limb to retain him thus strengthening Oher's position at one of the tackle spots ( or even Monroe's spot at LT should Eugene move on ).

I just don't think Ozzie would part with 4th and 5th round draft picks to rent Monroe for 2/3 of a season. Everyone knows how much Ozzie covets draft picks. I want him signed long-term, but I'm okay with the tag if that doesn't get worked out.

While that is probably true, if Monroe gets a big contract elsewhere we will get a 3rd or 4th round pick in the 2015 draft as compensation. In the end the trade may cost us a 5th round pick at most. Not a huge loss especially to stay true to right player/right price.

That is far from a given. 1 not all of his comp pick value comes from the size of teh contract. 2 If they sign other FA's that pick value will go down.

Eugene Monroe won’t be giving Ravens a discount

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh sees Eugene Monroe as the team’s long-term solution at left tackle.

They better be willing to pay him if they want to keep him.

Monroe joined Glenn Clark of 1570 WNST in Baltimore and said, like Michael Bennett with the Seattle Seahawks, that he’s not interested in being “Costco or Walmart” and won’t be entertaining any discounts from the Ravens.

Everyone in the business should understand, even coaches when they’re going through their deals negotiating contracts, you have to get the absolute best because you put forth your best effort all the time, every single day in this league,” Monroe said. “So there are definitely no discounts, and you have to have you and your family’s best interests at heart in terms of negotiating these deals.”

“It’s interesting, wanting to be here but also knowing there could be possibilities everywhere and just waiting patiently to see how those opportunities may unfold.”

The Ravens traded for Monroe in October in a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Monroe started the final 11 games for the season for Baltimore. General manager Ozzie Newsome said the team is already talking with “several” of their players about contracts and Monroe is likely high on the list.

However, they shouldn’t expect him to come at a clearance price.

True that is far from given but the vast majority of the pick calculation is based upon size of contract. It's the easiest part to analyze in terms of weighting Free Agent against Free Agent. There are other parts such as performance that go into the calculation but they don't have anywhere near the weighting of contract value.

Only comparable contracts factor into the calculation. If we lose Monroe to an $8mill per season contract somewhere and then sign a UFA to an $8mill per season contract then we won't get a compensatory pick. However, if we sign a UFA to a vet minimum contract this won't effect the compensatory pick calculation and we will still get a high pick.

FWIW Monroe would have to sign somewhere for around $10m+ per season for us to get a 3rd but that generally seems to be the contract value to get a 3rd round pick.
