It's not the only key, but it's a big one that Preston identifies. Once this domino falls the rest will go.

For the Ravens to be successful in the offseason, a top priority is getting Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs to agree to a contract extension, freeing up some salary cap room to sign other players.

Teams can begin negotiating with unrestricted free agents March 8. Free agency begins at 4 p.m. March 11.

According to an NFL source, the two sides are making progress, and the assumption here is that a new deal is likely.

Suggs has one year remaining on a six-year, $62.5 million contract worth $12.4 million this season. If the Ravens could get him to sign a new, lower deal, it could save the team $5 to $6 million and give them about $17 to $18 million in cap space.

a move that shouldnt be made, but I suppose has to be made. His age has caught up to him, not recovering from injuries quickly, injuries often, those muscle injuries are a killer and happen often after 30....

How long do they extend him? 2 years, give what, six up front, prorated out over 3 years, having him cost instead of $12 against the cap 5 or 6 mil for each of the next three years? Not bad if he can stay healthy and be consistantly productive......

For a DE or outside rush LB speed, especially that first step is their whole game. Once you lose that, basically you're done. That's what happened to Boulware and many others...one day your great, the next it's over.

Suggs has lost that step and some upper body power. He's still solid, but he's not a playmaker. He can still cover and play the run...and getting 10 sacks last season is very good production, yet the truth remains: his production dropped of the second half of the season and he's been injured the last 2 years.

PB never lost a step Max, it was his shoulder that never healed properly, he developed bersitus in it, a killer when needing it for strength every day. Suggs though, is OK at coverage, nothing great, and certainly nothing over five yards......... I think it is a poison pill, if they cut him, they take the full hit now, if not, they just take nicks until he is gone in 3 years. As you said, 10 sacks nice, except they all came when the team least needed, at least, most of them did, same for Dummervil sacks as well Both players disappeared in the 2nd half, due to injury yes, but that is the point, they can't stay healthy; bad when you have to pay them top dollar.

I'm not sure Suggs can stay healthy anymore. Too many injuries are occurring in a short time frame. He may already be done. But best cap solution is to extend him unless...

Maybe Rex would take him in a trade?

Bite the bullet. It is I think a $7mil hit. Try to trade him. Get what you can. If you have no takers just cut ties.

If you see and I see suggs play diminish,30 other teams did also, Cleveland being the exception
