Saturdays Practice

vmax

This practice resembled many of the Ravens' games last season, when quarterback Joe Flacco was under constant pressure. Some of it had to do with starting guards Marshal Yanda and Kelechi Osemele getting the day off. Left tackle Eugene Monroe has to be looking forward to the preseason, so he will get to face someone other than Terrell Suggs, who has had his number in camp.

•Cornerback Chykie Brown has been the lightening rod of this year's camp. After struggling mightily in the first week of camp, Brown drew headlines for a different reason Saturday. He was thrown out of practice briefly after kicking a ball, and he returned in enough time to trade swings with wide receiver Steve Smith.

•Jacoby Jones had his best day of what has been an uneventful camp. He might have caught more passes Saturday than in the previous eight practices combined. With Marlon Brown struggling to catch the ball, Jones needs to assert himself as the No. 3 wide receiver.

•Kamar Aiken, who has been released by three teams (Buffalo, Chicago and New England) in his career, continues to stand out in what has become an interesting battle for the last few wide receiver spots. He caught two passes in the back of the end zone in a red zone drill, showing off his strong hands again.

•On a day when emotions ran high, guard Ryan Jensen and defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore got into a fight. It didn't escalate, but Jensen did end up on his back.

•Along with the starting guards, tight end Owen Daniels and linebacker Pernell McPhee all got the day off. Jensen and A.Q. Shipley filled in at guard with the first-team offense.

•Schedule: The Ravens have a 1 p.m. ET practice Sunday.

•Injury wire: WR Michael Campanaro bruised his ribs after falling on the ball during practice. ... CB Lardarius Webb (back) missed his seventh straight practice. He will be sidelined for at least the first two games. ... ILB Daryl Smith (groin) was sidelined for a fourth consecutive day. ... DT Timmy Jernigan (back spasms) should return soon, according to coach John Harbaugh. ... G Will Rackley (head) also didn't practice. ... NT Terrence Cody (hip) is on the physically unable to perform list. http://espn.go.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/11734/ravens-camp-report-day-9

•The defense was “relentless” for the majority of the day. The first-team defense was particularly strong as the front seven badgered Flacco and gobbled up the run game.

•Part of the reason for the defense’s success was that starting guards Marshal Yanda and Kelechi Osemele were given the day off. So was outside linebacker Pernell McPhee and tight end Owen Daniels.

•A.Q. Shipley laid one of the biggest hits of training camp when he went to help right tackle Rick Wagner and popped linebacker Nicholas DiMarco, who had a pair of sacks earlier.

•Wide receiver Kamar Aiken continues to impress. He went up high to catch a couple of touchdowns in the back of the end zone.

•Outside linebacker Terrell Suggs was jacked up and dominant throughout practice. He kept imploring his defense to take it to the offense, bringing out some of that cocky edge the unit wants to revive. After Brown was kicked out of practice, Suggs made a play and called out, “I got you coach!” to Pees. Suggs also chatted with Harbaugh about the incident.

•Brown did bounce back somewhat after returning to practice. He got a pass deflection (it would have been a difficult pick) on third down and got a lot of encouragement from his defensive teammates. Many players have been trying to pump Brown up.

•Left guard Ryan Jensen and defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore got into a fight with Jensen ending up on his back. Harbaugh asked the defense who started it, and, of course, they pointed to Jensen. Harbaugh penalized the offense 15 yards.

•In a typical Suggs move, he walked up to Ravens Senior Vice President of Public & Community Relations Kevin Byrne and just swatted his clipboard out of his hands. “I’ve been waiting 10 years to do that!” he yelled. http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/82-Training-Camp-Practice-Highlights-Chykie-Brown-Briefly-Kicked-Out-Of-Practice/ef9ab92d-4636-409c-b81b-a88238563476

I'm not liking losing Urban...Webb now will miss the first 2 pre season games...Chykie's Toast...

But every day there are a lot of positive reports too.

Good for Harbaugh for tossing Brown out and flagging Pees for going on the field. The Ravens have to put a big dent in the stupid mental errors catagory.

Losing Urban only hurts a little bit because the defensive front 7 is loaded but somebody, either a player stepping up or Oz working some magic, better shore up the CB position. Wagner's been getting such good reports that CB has become the biggest issue.

I hope Webby comes back without any lingering issues or worse.

The last couple of practices have been quite intense. Once Brown got his permission slip signed and was allowed to return to the field, he got into a fight with wide receiver Steve Smith.

It didn’t last long, but if it had, I would have taken Smith. For a little dude, he has no fear.

Second-year offensive tackle Ryan Jensen has replaced fellow tackle Jah Reid as the lineman getting into the most fights. Jensen mixed it up with end Kapron Lewis-Moore, and actually it wasn’t Jensen’s fault, because he was whipping Lewis-Moore while pass blocking him. He took Lewis-Moore down twice while playing.

I’m starting to like second-year fullback Kyle Juszczyk. He is never going to be a thumping lead blocker like Sam Gash or Vonta Leach, but he does have good hands.

And when he turns upfield, he is a load to tackle.

It’s early, but this could be a good draft class, one of the best in years.

I think Webb setting out 2 preseason games is a good thing, get the others playing that they need and they need to see. I do worry about his back. I am sure that sometime in the past Webb had something with his back before.

All the camp things I have been reading, watching and listening to, Eugene Monroe hasn't looked good at all, hear the same about the center Jeremy Zuttah

Brown has all the tools to be a solid corner/nickleback, if he can just get his head on straight and trust his talent. Monroe, as I said when they traded for him; he is very weak at the point of attack, a year older he is slower to getting to the 2nd level and even in zone blocking at the los. a big waste.... I hope he turns it around, Joe needs a good left tackle....

Sundays practice.......

Coach John Harbaugh was impressed with the offense, saying that group made "major strides" on Sunday. Joe Flacco had one of his best days of camp with some precise throws. He connected with Marlon Brown and Steve Smith on a couple of deep passes and threw into some tight windows, especially in the red zone.
•There are more concerns for the Ravens at cornerback after Jimmy Smith collided with Asa Jackson. Smith winced and grabbed at his lower back but continued to play. The Ravens then held him out of the rest of practice for precautionary reasons. With Lardarius Webb sidelined with a back injury, Chykie Brown and Asa Jackson were the cornerbacks with the first-team defense.
•In what has been a recurring scene at camp, Chykie Brown was beaten on another deep throw by wide receiver Steve Smith. Brown, however, got a measure of revenge when he stripped Smith after a catch. To rub it in, Brown then did Smith's trademark ball spin.
•Wide receiver Torrey Smith made a couple of remarkable catches. In a one-on-one drill, he somehow pulled in a high pass by catching it over his helmet. Then, in the red zone, he held onto a laser pass from Flacco around the chin area. Safety Brynden Trawick told Smith, "You caught that one in self defense."
•Tight end Owen Daniels has no burst getting off the line and he's been having trouble getting separation. When he did make one catch, he fumbled the ball without getting hit.
•The buzz around undrafted rookie cornerback Deji Olatoye is starting to subside. His latest misstep was getting pulled out of a special teams drill because he lined up wrong on the punt team.
•In what has been a physical battle all camp, left guard Kelechi Osemele mauled over linebacker Josh Bynes and then stood over top of him. It was only last week when Bynes instigated a fight with Osemele.
•Tight end Dennis Pitta and linebacker Elvis Dumervil both received days off.
•Schedule: The Ravens have a 7 p.m. ET practice Monday at Navy-Marine Corps in Annapolis, Maryland. It's free to watch practice, and it's $10 per car for parking.
•Injury wire: CB Lardarius Webb (back) missed his eighth straight practice. ... ILB Daryl Smith (groin) was sidelined for a fifth consecutive day. ... DT Timmy Jernigan (back spasms) returned Sunday but didn't participate in team drills. ... WR Michael Campanaro (ribs) didn't practice after getting injured Saturday. ... There's no timetable for the return of backup G Will Rackley (head). ... NT Terrence Cody (hip) is on the physically unable to perform list. Asked if there was a possibility of Cody returning over next couple of weeks, Harbaugh said, "I'd say no. He's going to rehab the hip for a while."http://espn.go.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/11770/ravens-camp-report-day-10

Sounds like Daniels has the Dallas Clark syndrom; old age catching up to him quickly, such a shame.
