dc. Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Mentioned in the other post... We're in the final four... with teh Red Sox, Angels and Nats. Boras is implying that regional ties are important... maybe eliminating the Angels? We made a 7 year, 140-150m offer. Nats and Angels are both at 8 for 160ish. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/basebal...0,3105554.story Quote
ForceEight Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 MacPhail acknowledged the Orioles are "handicapped" if the most important factor for Teixeira was winning immediately. Is it just me, or does that absolutely kill it? Quote
thundercleetz Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Is it just me, or does that absolutely kill it? As it does the Nats. Which is why you see every analyst predicting Boston will get him, even though it is not clear what their offer is. From Roch: The Orioles made an offer for first baseman Mark Teixeira last night that may have jumped from seven to eight years during the back-and-forth with agent Scott Boras. And it probably isn't their final offer. Right now, we're guessing eight years at around $160 million, but that's just a ballpark figure, so to speak. The Washington Nationals are believed to be offering 8/$160 million. Again, it's mostly speculation at this point. Reporters are making educated guesses and hoping that sources will come through. http://masnsports.com/2008/12/leaving-macp...-not-las-v.html Quote
Spen Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 We made a 7 year, 140-150m offer. Nats and Angels are both at 8 for 160ish. Which is a huge offer so the team shouldn't be labeled as being cheap. However if they go that far, whats another year? Quote
GrubberRaven Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I'm slightly concerned over the reports that Varitek is resigning with the Sox as I remember something about Boras trying to package Tex and Tek together...they're friends according to their GT ties? Quote
dc. Posted December 11, 2008 Author Posted December 11, 2008 I dont know if they are friends... considering they played, what, 12 years apart? I also know that the Sox were always looking to gt Tek back... so the tie doesn't bother me. Also - the O's are offering more money per year for only 7 years... if they add a year, they would likely lower their per-year salary which could just make them one of the gang again Quote
thundercleetz Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 You guys think we have a chance at Tex? Quote

Almost $1.5 million more per year. Quote
varaven45 Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Two chances of getting Tex: slim and none and slim left town. ;) Quote
cravnravn Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Tex is playing Baltimore like a 2 dolla ho, he'll be in Boston come spring training. Quote
Spen Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I guess they shouldnt even try to sign him. Bring back Raffy. Quote
cravnravn Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I guess they shouldnt even try to sign him. Bring back Raffy. Tell angelos to get his sorryass off his wallet, up the ante if he wants to compete. If not..Its cellar dwellers for some time to come. Quote

The Orioles are in the running, one of the final 4 teams in the hunt of Tex. Should they pay him whatever he wants no matter what? Quote
ForceEight Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 The Orioles are in the running, one of the final 4 teams in the hunt of Tex. Should they pay him whatever he wants no matter what? Someone else will, and we'll lose because of it. Quote
Spen Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Someone else will, and we'll lose because of it. But still, should they? Dont misunderstand me, if another year or even two are the difference between what we offer and what he takes then I agree the Orioles should have gone for that. But what if someone offers a 10 year 280 million deal? Should the Orioles match or try to beat that? No real right or wrong answer, just an opinion question. Some feel that no matter what the Orioles offer, if Tex goes elsewhere then the Orioles failed. Others feel it is understandable not to try to match what are viewed as contracts that are too high. Quote
83eh01 Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I'd rather sign him and hope for the best with the pitching prospects. If they don't pan out, this team will never compete ever again. So it would be no big deal with the Teixeira contract anyways. Quote
dc. Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 The point Spen is making is that we have to decide what Tex is actually worth. Even with Tex, this team is not going to compete in 2009. So if he is going to ask for absurd numbers, beyond his value, why should we pay them? Because he's a hometown boy and the fans want him so bad? I mean, don't get me wrong, good PR never hurts and I want Tex... but not at any cost. There will be big bats available next year... and the year after... we do not HAVE to break the bank. Quote

thundercleetz Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Sports Center just reported that Tex will be at the O's game as a guest of Angelos. Go Peter! Get this DONE! Quote
dc. Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 Schmuck posted midgame that no one with the Ravens had any info... so if Tex was there, it was as a normal fan and PA had invited him without the Ravens knowledge. Quote
ForceEight Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Unless it was covered up intentionally, which is my opinion. Quote
83eh01 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 What if Angelos wasn't at the game because he was at the Warehouse with Boras? It makes me wonder if Roch or Schmuck thought about this rather than finding out that Teixeira (apparently) wasn't at the game in the owner box or MASN suite Quote
dc. Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 Tex has an "enormous attraction" to the Orioles and Baltimore, according to Karl Ravech of ESPN. http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/...egoryId=2521705 Still nothing written... just that video. Schmuck says Tex has a Christmas/holiday deadline... so he expects things to be done by Friday or Saturday. It's gonna be a lot of fun. And as always... if the issue is area... the O's have a huge advantage. If the issue is winning... the O's are way down the list. Gotta hope and pray he comes our way. And Ravech is saying the decision is "getting closer and closer" and the teams keep upping it. Quote
