oldno82 Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 We are going to need a few more players if we're actually going to compete for a Super Bowl or even the playoffs. They won't be here unless this issue gets resolved and soon. Ngata and the Ravens in 2011 Quote
vmax Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 The Ravens definately need to get Ngata signed to a new contract but as far as the CAP situation and helping this team, I think it's too late. The good centers and RT's are gone. It will provide some depth money...some guys will get cut before the final rosters are set and the Ravens may pick up a bargan but not an impact guy. This might help get a slappy, scrap heap back up QB....but they might be worse than Taylor under pressure. That's why they arte back ups. The Ravens got damn lucky with Evans. Quote
OutsideRzAcE Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I am not one to complaim about the local sports writers, but it's ridiculous that no-one has gotten the story on why this Ngata deal hasn't been finalized yet. It's very bizzare. Quote

Though I admit I don't know of any, there might be some OT/C material we could trade for if we solve the Ngata problem. Quote

vmax Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 This is all I can find. From Today jamisonhensleyJamison Hensleyby 1WinningDrive#Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome wasn't expansive when asked about the status of extension talks with Ngata: "We're having dialogue." And This.... The Ravens are among the teams that have the smallest amount of salary-cap space, according to Pro Football Talk. As of Aug. 15, the Ravens are $2.8 million under the cap....If the Ravens were able to sign Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to a long-term deal, it would likely free up an additional $6 million to $7 million in cap space.http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2011/08/report_ravens_have_28_million_in_salarycap_space.html Quote
oldno82 Posted August 16, 2011 Author Posted August 16, 2011 Well there sure doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency. Either that, or they're far apart. I wonder how much Ngata's asking for. Maybe the Ravens are holding back some because they know they've got Flacco to re-sign next year. Just a guess. You can't keep everybody with the cap in place and I am a fan of the cap. Quote

Looks like $60 Mill. That really doesn't seem like much for a force like Ngata but it definitely seems to be giving Bisciotti pause....he says Ngata isn't giving the Ravens the "hometown discount". Ravens Owner Steve Bisciotti said he has “no doubt” that the Ravens will sign Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to a contract extension. But he, like everyone else not named Ozzie Newsome, doesn’t know exactly when that will happen.Steve Bisciotti Steve Bisciotti answers a fan question during Tuesday night's PSL Owner Fan Forum “I’m having a hard time giving away $60 million, the way this thing is going,” Bisciotti said in a Fan Forum with PSL holders Tuesday evening. “I have to leave that stuff up to Ozzie. It’s one of those things, there’s a certain way about the negotiations. … We would have loved to have had a deal and I don’t ask Oz if they’re close or not.” More story... Quote

Interesting, your take on Bisciotti's comment about the $60 mil was different than what I interpreted it to mean: I thought he meant he was willing to give him $60 mil but implied Ngata wanted either more or other considerations. ??? That's how I read it as well. I can't say I blame any player for trying to get as much as possible. Ngata knows he will get more than 60 mil. 60 million dollars?! Quote
dapetes Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 60,000,000 dollars turn him loose. Noooooo football player is worth that kinda money. They paid tooooo much for Suggs 35,000,000. One of the reasons we have a cap problem now. Apparently the economy is fine for everyone. Call washington and let them know. Apparently they don't know everything is just fine. Football will be affected by the economy out there, sooner or later. Spend judiciously. Quote
yagersports Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 We did not over pay for Suggs. He is one of maybe three guys that can sack the QB 10 plus times, get double blocked while doing so, also play the run with a sick vengence, and drop into coverage to cover TEs! Folks there just aren't many guys out there that can do that! Lastly....the guy never takes a play off! The only guy in the league that I can think of that matches up is Harrison. Suggs would be sorely missed if he wasn't here. Quote
colincac Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 60 Million/6 Years might be fair. If it's 5, I understand why we aren't signing him. Quote
oldno82 Posted August 18, 2011 Author Posted August 18, 2011 Its not the money that bothers me, Bisciotti's probably got plenty, its the cap. While Ngata getting a new contract will help our cap space now, what does it do the future years? We've got Flacco and Ray Rice coming due next year. How are we going to handle them? Ozzie's got some tough decisions to make. Quote
papasmurfbell Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 They never had time to negotiate. That time was pissed away with the lockout. They will get it done or not. Suggs was overpaid. I think he is drastically overrated around this town. I am beginning to think that the public face is we want a SB but the conference room has translated into retool/rebuild mode. Quote
