I suppose his argument could be "I want them to win - but only the way I want, with players I want." But even that is a cop out. I mean, I would have hated if Kevin Gregg was the closer on the O's last year and put them in the playoffs... but I wouldn't have hated that the O's were playoff bound, just that Gregg was a turd. If you follow the sport, follow a specific team, watch almost exclusively their games, subscribe to a message board relating to that same particular team... you are fan. You may not want to be a fan, but you are. You may not actively root for the team, but apparently you WANT to actively root for the team. I think we need to get Sigmund Freud in here. Ink blot test coming up all Ravens and their coaches and players? Some hidden desires there, perhaps? Being mean to the girl you like at school?
