Report: Raiders expected to release Rolando McClain

The Raiders appear ready to let go of their most recent first-round pick.

According to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, “all indications are” the Raiders will release middle linebacker Rolando McClain on Tuesday, the start of the 2013 league year. Per the Chronicle report, releasing McClain on Tuesday will result in a salary-cap hit of more than $7 million, but the penalty can be taken over two seasons.

Just 23, McClain has started 38 games in three seasons for Oakland. However, he served a two-game team suspension for detrimental conduct, and he has had multiple off-field incidents.

The first linebacker and fifth defensive player taken in the 2010 draft, McClain could get some looks simply on the promise he showed in the not-so-distant past at the University of Alabama. He’s also two seasons removed from a 99-tackle, five-sack season for the Raiders. Nevertheless, if indeed he’s released, it will be an inglorious development for a player drafted after Joe Haden and before C.J. Spiller a little less than three years ago.

They'll be cap smart and not go after FA. They'll resign Ellerbe and let Kruger walk. Then draft one or two ILB/OLB's and maybe pickup a cheap vet after the draft.

Would really like picking up McClain and now Spikes (who was just released by SD) to attempt to fill the MLB spot this year. Both should come cheap. Still hoping we resign Ellerbe though.

McClain should be pretty cheap if you can get him via waivers. They get him on his rookie deal without the SB cap hit. If they need to work his deal any they can take his salary and make that into a bonus.

Many players have attitude issues with that franchise. Could it be that the team is so meesed up that the players need out at all costs. I think you could grab him cheap and if he is an issue dump him. He could be the guy you need to fill a big vacume.

His D line in college made him a star.

He sounds like a real idiot to me. There's nothing "Raven" about him.

I'd be real reluctant to take any more character-issue guys now that Ray is out of the picture and Ed might be following him. Those 2 guys kept miscreants in line.

I would be interested in signing McClain but I wouldn't jump into it. I would expect Ozzie to have a long sit down with Rolando, Bama alum to Bama alum and figure out whether the situation in Oakland had anything to do with Rolando's behavior or is he just a bad egg.
