TBird Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Fans are saying no big deal. He just goes at the bottom of the pile. Theywant a legit starter at CB but they are hard to find. Harbs did say theFO is working on a trade for one. We're deep in LBs and WRs and teamsneed them. Everyone from Ozzie to Kokinis is making calls. Meanwhile Cox isn't so bad. He had a good rookie year and went to SDafter playing out his contract. Didn't do so hot so Minn picked him upfor camp and just released him. How about Franks. Nobody was excited when hecame. Since he gave up the TD to DEZ after Jimmy went down, he hassettled down and is doing OK for us, not great but OK and he missedsome of camp but has settled down. He didn't lose any games for us.We won them all this summer. Film Study gave him a (0/+1) rating.Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant (right) celebrates a TD ... which ended with Bryant leaping over Ravens cornerback Dominique Franks ..I don't remember anyone getting excited when Corey Graham was signedbut look what he did and everyone was pissed when he left, same withIH.So Oz picks up another vet on the cheap who just mightbe able to help us while still trying to trade.Oz brought in Monroe and Zuttah when everyone was panicing over the o-line. Cox, the vet, just might turn out to be OK playing for a SB team. http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Ravens-Sign-Cornerback-Derek-Cox/24472cfe-74c8-415e-9784-adb80907e31b Quote

I'll buy that, after all we restructured Webbys contract yesterday to free up some CAP Quote
tsylvester Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Let us see, tall, 6-1, fast, 4.39 but can't cover the grille before it rains even with a week's notice. I suppose they only have a roster spot to lose with this deal, but if he could not make it in Mini, nor in SD with that HUGE contract, not sure he can make it anywhere..... Quote
TBird Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 Yea, I forgot about Webb. He obviously got the message when they got ridof Boldin. When the team asks you to restructure it's because they need thesavings and you better take a cut or else. Quote

I suppose they only have a roster spot to lose with this deal, but if he could not make it in Mini, nor in SD with that HUGE contract, not sure he can make it anywhere.....That's what Pissburgh said when they cut Unitas. I like what this guy said. In grabbing a vet, the Ravens have given their secondary another experienced player. While Cox may not be a world-beater what he is is a guy who can actually play for you -- even if its only in certain sub-packages. On a current roster where Webby has a back issue, Asa is undersized and inexperienced and Chykie is Chykie adding a guy who has experience and can be thrown onto the field in sub-packages isn't a bad thing. I'll admit that I personally wanted more or a higher-level player, but finding a good caliber corner may've cost more via trade than Ozzie was willing to part with -- as Ozzie has said publicly ' we (the Ravens' organization) like draftpicks'. I'm okay with the move. Sometimes you have to build things from the bottom up, and if this move pushes Chykie out of any reasonable playing packages defensively then I call that a 'win'. We'll see how it goes folks. Quote

DB's are only as good as the front 7, no pressure from the front 7 and a DB is cooked back there Quote
TBird Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 Great point. The Jags, and Minn aren't exactly great teams. Ravens front 7should take a lot of heat off secondary. Quote

Just look at Tampa last year, Revis stunk caus he had no up front pressure and if NE this season doesnt get a push, Revis will stink again. Quote
tsylvester Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Just look at Tampa last year, Revis stunk caus he had no up front pressure and if NE this season doesnt get a push, Revis will stink again. Revis had an off year because of his injury and they used him wrong. Chykie is actually a good player, but inconsistant. With more time, he will get more consistant. Who ever wrote that quote is quite a bit of a mostly sunny as apossed to partly cloudy type of person when it comes to the Ravens. In Mini, he never got the chance to play with their fron four because he didn't work well in the packages, and cannot cover. He relies too much on his speed to make up for his lack of instinct as SD found out after giving him a giant contract. Quote
cravnravn Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Revis had an off year because of his injury and they used him wrong. Dont buy that 1 bit, Tampas front 7 was soft... Just look at our DB;s we lost after the league started to notice how dominate our front boys were starting in 2000. Quote
TBird Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 Chykie has the measurables but has been unable to transfer it to thepro game from college. It's just hasn't clicked upstairs for him. He's donea little better lately. Quote

Just look at our DB;s we lost after the league started to notice how dominate our front boys were starting in 2000. Buy or not, it is the truth. He is a cover corner, not a zone corner, Tampa ran zone 90% + of the time, taking away his cover ability. Last season, the Ravens front was weak as well, dispite what the sack numbers might say. Most of those sacks came in a few game stretch against poor teams. As the season went on, the pressures were few & far between. This year still remains to be seen, even with a great preseason so far from them. TBird, I do agree he has been slow to respon, but it is not that he doesn't get it, he does, he just thinks too much and doesn't let his instincts take over. When he has, we saw the results, great play. Quote
vmax Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I'll admit that I'm stretching it here and probably reading too much between the lines but this signing tells me Webb won't be ready week 1...maybe week 2....3... Quote
vmax Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Ozzies up to something... “[The move] certainly raises a red flag,” wrote ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. “[T]he Ravens presumably have something in mind with that extra $3 million in cap room … While nobody knows the Ravens' plans yet, we do know that the Ravens are doing something that they try to avoid. Why the Ravens don't like restructuring deals is because it bloats the salary-cap numbers for future years.” http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Late-For-Work-828-Restructuring-A-Deal-What-Is-Ozzie-Newsome-Up-To/a0db0f25-f00a-41cf-9648-79622c9c2662 Quote

That is not an easy route to cover at all. Great reaction and showed his long arms. Playing the nickel spot as well. Quote

Great reaction and showed his long arms. Playing the nickel spot as well. One play in one game against guys who will not be playing in the NFL this season.... again, he was cut THIS year, twice, once by SD who gave him $20 mil last year, once by Mini in this FIRST cut downs. Maybe he comes back to his rookie form, maybe he doesn't. Stats do not tell an entire story, but the Jags, who need corner help, let him walk, SD, who needs corner help cut him, and Mini who needs corner help cut him. Those people know more about him and this game than you or I..... Quote
TBird Posted August 29, 2014 Author Posted August 29, 2014 Um, this is more than 1 play. Clearly, you weren't watching and this with being onthe club for 2 days while learning a new system. The boxscore had him listed with 4 Ts and a PD. Quote

The boxscore had him listed with 4 Ts and a PD. Yippie, again, pre season against scrubs. Let us see if he can regain his form, then we can chat more. Frankly, I hope he does, the Ravens are desperate for help in the secondary, obvious by this move and the clearing of cap space. Most in the know saw this move as desperate because of his track record. Keep in mind, the Ravens were playing a simple defense, straight zone alternating with straight man, not complicated, even for some one on the team for two days....... Quote
TBird Posted August 30, 2014 Author Posted August 30, 2014 The entire game was vs scrubs for the most part. Ravens didn't even start their big guys. Joe and Ricewere on the sidelines wearing t-shirts. Everyone wants to keep Toussant the RB and his runswere vs the scrubs. Taliaferro moved up to the first team after making great runs vs the scrubsand led the league in rushing going into the Skins game but most were vs the scrubs. Cox was only here for 2 days learning a system and making plays in his first game. He has more experience than Chykie and Asa combined. Nobody knew Corey would win the PO game vsDenver with a huge interception that led to Tuck's winning FG. Cox might do somethingsimilar. I'm just trying to be optimistic. He'll be OK, Geesh. Quote

ForceEight Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Another reason to be concerned. What's wrong with Webb and Jackson that they feel they have to let Bynes go?I think the risk of losing a CB on Sunday and needing one to step up (remember, we only have four on the roster!) is the primary issue. Bynes isn't nearly as valuable as someone like Cox right now. Quote
GrubberRaven Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Starters are Webb and Smith, Jackson and Brown are 2nd and Cox is 3rd. Insurance. Webb is fragile...steady, but fragile. Quote
