TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Aaron Wilson is reporting it. No details. Damn - Our first pick in the draft will be a pass rusher after losing Ngata and McPhee in the sameweek. Damn. Quote
tsylvester Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 I wouldn't bet on that, between Williams and Jernigan, plus Guy, they will be fine along the line. Quote
TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I agree it hurts. He led us to the SB and 5 straight POs and 6 of 7. Losing McPhee and Ngata is one of the biggest FA losses in our history including losing Boldin whowas also traded, Ellerbe, Kruger, Art Jones and JJ. Everyone is guessing Ozzie will get either a 4th or 5th rounder from Lions which would have been a steal hadhe just signed with someone else. Ozzie does well in the 4th and 5th round. I still say a pass rusher in the first round this year. Quote
charmcity78 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 What's the cap savings ? 8.5 or his 16 he was going to make with us? Quote
tsylvester Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 $8.5 saved. There really isn't a pass rusher who will be worth a first round pick when the Ravens pick. Ozzie has found the McPhee's, JJ's etc, later in the draft, even as un drafted, more reason to not reach at 26. Quote
TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Im pretty sure it's $8.5M and Suggs just restructured so they saved $2M from that so suddenly they get $10.5M inCAP savings but they were $5.1M over the CAP til now. I'm hearing rumors that Ozzie got a 4th and 5th rounders from DET. That would indeed be a steal if true. They get nothing if he leaves w/o signing him. Quote

tsylvester Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 yes, espn says a 4th & 5th round pick. great deal Quote
TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Thanks Caldwell. Giving him a job here just paid off. And don't forget this. Ozzie can now trade up for a pass rusher or maybe a WR like Jaelen Strong. They didn't have fifth and sixth round picks, just comp pics in 4, 5, 6, and 7. Now they have the flexibility to package thesetwo with a regular pick in 2, 3 or 4 to move up if they like a player. Quote
charmcity78 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Still don't understand the NFL Salary cap, he took up 16 million in cap space, yet trading him only saves 8.5 Quote
tsylvester Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Still don't understand the NFL Salary cap, he took up 16 million in cap space, yet trading him only saves 8.5 Yes, it takes a bit of study, just 8.5.... Lions get the Ravens 7th round pick too boot... Quote
TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 DET did it because they lost their other DT - Fairly-sp. Ngata was due $16M this year had he stayed. According to the CBA agreement with the union, theteam saves about half of that if he leaves which is called dead money because it is still figured in the CAPbut he isn't here. It's like paying alimony or interest on your credit cards. You hate doing it but you have to. Quote

So the Ravens get out of his regular pay for 2015 but eat the remaining bonus money they paid a while back. Quote
thundercleetz Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Awesome deal! We trade a part time player for fourth and fifth round picks (great ammunition), and kept Ngata out of the conference. Papa this trade has to make you happy! Quote

Papa this trade has to make you happy! It is good. He should do it more often and get more in compensation. Really it looks like they saw nothing could be done and Det was in need so they made a quick deal. If they ID guys earlier they can work a deal hard and get more. Quote
TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Damn man - Dig this. Ozzie just rebuilt the entire team with this Ngata trade plus the comp picks he's gettingfrom other players he previously lost. This was posted on another board. __________________________________________ Current Ravens 2015 Draft Picks (tradable)(not including compensatory picks or displacement due to compensatory pick placement, which begins at the end of round 3)1st - #262nd - #583rd - #904th - #119 (Detroit)*4th - #122*5th - #150 (Detroit)*6th - #188 (Dallas)*And Over The Cap Dot Com had us projected to get a 4th, and two 5th's for comp picks. So, that could be1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 69 picks and those 5 picks in rounds 4-5 could be a big plus for moving back up in the draft to take a desired player. ____________________________________ Like a WR, RB, pass rusher - anything. TBird Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Oz has been improving in the 2d round. We just lost Torrey from there, Rice was from there. We lost him too.Jernigan was from 2d round but so was Aaron Brown whom Oz traded up for but on draft day he wasconsidered one of the best line backers in the draft. Last season there were still teams trying to trade for him and Oz said no. Somebody sure likes him. Quote
vmax Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 This was good for the Ravens.... This is where the Ravens come out winners. The Ravens weren't going to be able to do anything in free agency by carrying Ngata's team-high $16 million cap figure. So, the Ravens created $8.5 million in much-needed cap space that can be used to sign a wide receiver, running back and tight end in free agency, and picked up a couple of mid-round picks along the way....An argument can be made that Ngata did the Ravens a favor by not agreeing to an extension. He's 31 years old, and the decline in 30-something defensive tackles can often be rapid. There were no guarantees that Ngata was going to play at a high level for the next two to three years....The additional $8.5 million in cap space will go a long way in replacing Smith and Daniels. This also will give the Ravens 10 total picks (when you factor in compensatory picks) in the draft, where they have done most of their work in building six playoff teams in seven years.http://espn.go.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/ Bad for Royal Farms. cravnravn Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 (edited) From the Detroit Press: Sacrificing two mid-round 2015 draft picks for aging Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata was yet another admission of the Detroit Lions' organizational failure. These draft picks should be considered useless in Detroit because of general manager Martin Mayhew's inability to regularly find starters from the middle of the draft.Good teams recognize the value in fourth- and fifth-round picks.Good teams consistently develop that value, making it much easier parting with a star whose salary investment isn't consistent with the expected level of production.More Lions moves: Team re-signs LB Josh BynesThe Ngata trade underscores why the Baltimore Ravens are one of the NFL's elite franchises and why the Lions struggle maintaining mediocrity. The Ravens are proactive. The Lions are reactive. The Ravens plan. And as a result, they keep advancing forward. The Lions panic. And as a result, they keep going back and forth. The Ravens know how the salary cap game works in the NFL. There must be a steady stream of young, inexpensive replacement pieces available giving them the necessary leverage to demand star players take pay cuts when their cap number grows too high or risk getting cut or traded. Linebacker Terrell Suggs agreed to restructure his contract because he knew the alternative and wanted to remain with a good team.Inside the Lions: Team could extend LB DeAndre LevyNgata didn't. He apparently wasn't willing to restructure the $8.5 million due in the final year of his contract. Baltimore learned last season that it could live well without him when Ngata missed four games due to a suspension. That's why he's a Lion today and the Ravens are happier with two middle-round draft picks. The Lions were desperate for a big name after losing Ndamukong Suh. Ngata gives them that. He has been a defensive force for the Ravens, anchoring the interior defense that won the Super Bowl in 2013. Ngata's resume helps the Lions further sell the mandate of "The Time is Now" in the aftermath of Suh's absence. But they're crossing their fingers that time hasn't run out for Ngata. He's 31, having battled in the big boy trenches for nine years. Cap-wise, he'll cost the Lions $8.5 million more than $10 million less than the average salary Miami will pay Suh. The Lions are only contractually committed for one year. There are no worries about lingering dead money. In Mayhew's mind, he figures he had nothing to lose. And that's precisely the problem. He lost plenty in this transaction with two middle-round draft picks that are only considered throwaways with the Lions because that's what they've too often done with them under Mayhew's watch. The good teams win these kind of trades because they appreciate the value of those picks, motivating them to throw away a star who has potentially outlived that allure. Not all is cake and ice cream about the ngata trade Edited March 12, 2015 by cravnravn Quote
