Ravens' history is reloading, not rebuilding

By Jamison Hensley | March 10, 2015 8:50:35 PM PDT

Only 45 minutes had passed into the official start of free agency, and the Baltimore Ravens traded one of the best players in franchise history and watched three of their top four free agents sign elsewhere.

For many teams, this is a tell-tale sign of rebuilding. For the Ravens, their history says it's time to reload again.

Tuesday marked another gut-wrenching beginning to free agency as the Ravens said goodbye to defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (traded to Detroit), wide receiver Torrey Smith (signed with San Francisco), linebacker Pernell McPhee (signed with Chicago) and tight end Owen Daniels (signed with Denver).

Good article by Hensley. If history and past performance continues, we should be allright.

We have many holes to fill and the draft this year is extremely critical for the good guys.

In Ozzie We Trust

Funny...seems like we were saying the same thing last year about the offensive line, WR, and TE and last year worked out decent.

More from the media outlets

King: Nobody Holds Ozzie Over A Barrel Let's not pretend Haloti Ngata isn't a freaking stud. He absolutely is. He is a different breed and dominantly anchored the Ravens defensive line for nine years. In the words of Owner Steve Bisciotti, Ngata is an iconic Raven and will be greatly missed.

Let's also not pretend that there isn't a business side to football, and GM Ozzie Newsome is freaking good at this stuff.

I just wish he would be better. Joe's agent held Ozzie over a barrel.

I'm perfectly content with the success the ravens have given us since 2008

I would go back yrs earlier. If they had signed Brees instead of trading for McNair I think there would be at least 2 more titles here.

Wow! That boggles my mind. Was Brees a FA back then?

Yeah. He was a FA the same off season McNair was traded for. Brees was at first going to Mia but failed the physical. Then NO was the only other team to give him a look and got a NO friendly deal. There was an out after 1 season. Going back then if you are Drew do you chose NO the perenial loser or the Ravens with the great D and just a couple yrs after a SB?

Remember Pops Brees was released from San Diego after that shoulder injury that needed surgery, question marks were all around Brees..at the time we made a business decision.

We can play what if with most of the stars of the NFL going back to the Baltimore Colts days.

I remember that offseason as well. A lot of us on the board were hoping for Brees. I forget what our cap situation was. I think it was tight, but not terrible. I'm sure we could have made a competitive offer. Maybe Billick was still holding on to hope that Boller could develop and an older QB like McNair as a short term option would be better.

That 2006 Ravens team is to this day one of my all time favorites.

Looks like Forsett will be a Raven again, 3 mil per year, not bad, hope he is not a one hit wonder....

Same here. Thinking positively:

- He didn't really take over the full workload until the third week or so, there might be some untapped production there (although added durability risks)

- A full offseason with the Ravens to prepare (has been working out at the Ravens facility up until the March 10 start of free agency).

- We saw Forsett start to be utilized in the passing game and he has the quickness and vision to cause mismatches. Trestman loves throwing the ball to his RB's.

Obviously there are risks with Forsett that have already been mentioned in the deal. Pending the breakdown of the deal, I like it a lot.

I figure it is basically a no lose situation for the Ravens at this price. If he produces great, if not, they lose very little on the cap, comparatively speaking.

I'm not really sure bringing him back was a good idea. I would rather have seen some cap money spent on Chandler the Bill's big TE that they cut. RB's just have so many durability issues. I know he's a 'young' 30, but I still have doubts. I'm thinking going with the draft for a mid-round RB would have been a better option.

'Course, Oz usually knows what he's doing. :gorave:

I agree that they should. Not early though, more like mid-round. I'm thinking they should let Pierce and Gradkowski go too.

Doing that would clear up about $2 million in cap money.
