Next time Ravens fans clamor for John Harbaugh's head, remember this: There are ton of wannabe's with lipstick that Ravens fans have good odds to get stuck with.

Finding a solid HC is becoming more and more like finding a franchise QB. A team can go decades before they get the right guy.

And all the while, the fan base suffers.

Quote

The eight teams with first-year head coaches have a combined .284 winning percentage; will any be out after one year?

With half of the season complete, teams who hired a first-time head coach in 2019 – the Dolphins, Bengals, Cardinals, Packers, Broncos, Browns – are a combined 16-34-1 (.320), with nearly half those wins coming from Matt LeFleur in Green Bay (7-2), the only newcomer with a winning record. Add in the Jets (1-7) and Bucs (2-6), who hired new coaches with prior experience in Adam Gase and Bruce Arians, and the situation is pretty bleak.

That's a .284 winning percentage, folks. In the words of Steve Spurrier: Not very good, not very good.

It could lead to an overwhelming number of overall coaching hires come 2020 – factor in multiple teams going "one-and-done" along with all of the other teams inevitably in the market for a new boss (Washington, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Dallas, Carolina, Tennessee and the New York Giants all bear monitoring in the second half of the season)....:scared:...........https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/first-year-coaching-hot-seats-breaking-down-who-could-be-one-and-done-among-the-eight/

The grass is not always greener.

I have to disagree.  When was Gase good?  He didnt deserve another shot.  Arians is in the middle of a rebuild.  So many of these guys are retreads that have never been good.  The last guy I really liked has been pretty good in Det now.  This wont be their yr but I see Patricia leading them to the POs soon.

I agree and disagree Max, as papa said, sure, we can look at wins & loses, but a lot goes into each one. As Steve Young has said many times, sure, ultimately the quarterback is responsible for the Int, but in between, did the line block properly, the receiver make the right read, did the ball bounce off his hands, did he cut off his route or run the wrong one?

It all depends on what say the head coach has in picking players and in some organizations, even his staff. Look at the Bengals, Brown usually chose the staff based on how much he would pay them. He historically under paid scouts and even then, discounted their advice. The result? Years of terrible teams, first round loses when they did manage to play well enough to make the playoffs.

But getting players to play hard, calling the right play, offense or defense, is only a part of coaching. Harbs is good at galvanizing his players. However, his in game coaching is terrible, has been since day one. So either he refuses to leqrn how to manage the game better or he just can't figure it out; bad at that coaching level.

His teams are always, it seems , among the top teams in penalties, costly, untimely ones that cost the team games. Simple ones; false start, off sides, too many on the field, delay of game, roughing/personal foul to a lesser degree.

Now the CBA prevents him from acting on those penalties to a certain extent, but there are still things he could do, yet fails to do so.

Sure, we could have a horrible coach, Marchebroda anyone, his second stint with this team, but I also think we cpuld do better, won more games if not for him. Maybe it is a wash, I give him credit for embracing the changes this team needed to make when they drafted Lamar, let us see if they give Lamar what he needs, player wise, gping forward. They failed Flacco in that regard, terrible drafting at wide outs and offensive line. Joe is a picket passer, they never gave him a pocket...

Parity rules and with the right head coach and his hand picked coaching staff, many of the teams would be competitive.

The problem is that there are few good HC's. Getting one that's decent is a blessing.

We have one.

It would not be that hard to get a better coach.

That's why I posted this.

It is that hard.

I read a lot of national / other market press this week and all of it had glowing things to say about Harbaugh.

We are lucky to have him. He's not perfect, and a bit weird at times, but he is really good.

I can disagree with a coach's calls and decisions at times and still think he is a good coach, unlike some other idiot I can think of.

For the most part his team is ready to play and plays hard for him.

25 years in and the Ravens gave had 2 really good coaches.

It is amazing right!?! Two super bowl wins, a lot of great games, two different styles of coaching. Billick has his flaws too, played his favorites, cost us games, just as Harbs.

No coach is perfect, not even Billy B, but just as I like to see player development, I expect a coach to grow as well. Billy B grew as a coach, he is not the same guy who coached the Browns all those years ago. Harbs should grow and so far, he has not, maybe the Super Bowl win so early in his career has stunted him.

Oh I know, he "changed" , willing to truly go running style qb as opposed to a pocket passer. But his ingame has not, Billy B's in game has changed over the years. He manages the game quite differently than he did as a coach for the Browns.

Any coach who you compare to Bellicheat becomes an ugly duckling.

Try comparing to the rest.

I'm not comparing the two Max, just an example, how people, coaches change, grow as they gain experience. I used Billy B because he was an average game manager when he started coaching, like Harbs, but learned and became one of the best.

Talent & scheme can win many games, but game management can cost many more. It is what makes Billy B so great,

Bill did it with Matt Cassel also.  Yes Brady is amazing but bill can flat coach his ass off.

Curious if we'll ever see life after Brady, under BB
