He needs his god damned head examined, 5 million dollars a year, hes hardly 3 mil a year..

He needs to SHOW ME

He probably knows that the Jimmy Smith will eventually replace him and wants to get the best FA deal possible. Maybe not, just a guess.

If he goes into the season and dosent perform?? thats a big gamble, Im sorry but the Ravens offer is too generous. If he dosent perform, it will gradually dwindle.

The only certainty in life is death and taxes....I'd take the offer. I liked his daughter quote

“I don’t take anything for granted,” Williams said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be in the NFL, but I know that 17 or 18 years from now my daughter is going to be in college and it’s going to be a bunch of money for tuition.”

He's worried about tuition with $15 million?

Posted

Yeah, he has to buy the gold chains, the homes for his babys momma, the bentleys, the the escalades with 12000 worth of wheels on them...Com on now, thats important stuff.

And if these two pre season games are an indicator of the Cary that we'll be seeing, then by week 15 he'll be lucky to be offered 27.50 an hour.

His agent didn't do Williams family any favors.

He looks like a "one year wonder" to me. If he doesn't perform then it will be vet minimum for him for the rest of his career.

I hope I have to eat these words.

At least he didn't use the "I have to put food on the table" excuse for not signing the contract.

When these guys use that excuse I always wonder where they do their shopping. Or maybe their agents do their shopping and tell them a bunch of bananas costs 1k per lb.

Anyway, why didn't he sign the contract and get security and then go looking for more if he outperforms the contract? Isn't that what most of these guys who holdout are doing?

"At least he didn't use the "I have to put food on the table" excuse for not signing the contract."

O yes he did... sort of

"For me to say the money ain't good, that wasn't the case. It's good money, but my job is to make the most money I possibly can for my family. I'm thinking about my daughter and any future children I want to have. I want some kind of security, and the deal we had wasn't like that."

From what I understand the offer was on par with other #2 CB's, even if he has a season like last year he wont get Revis money...his agent is blowing smoke up his.....

With all the grants and scholarships out there, he shouldnt worry about his daughters college education, hes a MILLIONAIRE for petes sake..He needs to worry about his playing and not a 2 year olds education, If he plays football good, he will be paid accordingly and will have no issues with worrying about his daughters education.

He keeps playing like shit, well then thats on him..If hes so worried about his kids education wondered what he majored in, in college?

Posted

Lets break it down, he turns down 5 mil a year, hell we dont even know what the bonus money is, now he accepts 1.9 mil tender for this year, 40% tax bracket, hes going to clear 1.4 million, the kid is two, College is 17 years away, take 75,000 of that 1.4 mil and invest it, I dont know oil futures, natural gas companies, some sort of mutual fund, he could easily turn that 75gs into 750 gs over a 17 year span...And the kids education is paid for and it still leases him 1.3 million THIS YEAR to go have fun with.

Play some football Cary, live for today!!!

Everything I have heard about Cary is that he is a very good family guy with his head on straight. He has overcome a lot. I respect Cary's decision to play out the year. It is definitely a risk, but sometimes you have to take a risk in life to get what you want. I can see why the Ravens offered three-years, $15 million. It is right in line with what the Redskins gave Josh Wilson (three-years $12 million). That is an average-to-above average starter contract.

Instead of trying to break down what Cary could do with $15 million, we should respect that he has confidence in his abilities to go out and have a great year to cash in. Three-years, $15 million sounds like a lot, but who knows what is guaranteed (Josh Wilson got $9 million guaranteed as comparison). So say the contract is 75% guaranteed, and suddenly $15 million is only $11.25 million. Uncle Sam gets 35% and Annapolis gets 7-8%, now $11.25 is only about $6.4 million. Still a lot of money, but with the type of contracts corners in this league are capable of, I can see why Cary would want to play out the season. If he gets even a $20 million contract in free agency, it is still a win for him. This is Cary's one opportunity in his lifetime to secure the future of his immediate family, and that of future generations. You have to respect that.

It's a win-win for the both parties. Cary does well, the Ravens defense does better. Sure, if Cary leaves for a big deal, great for him! He gave us his all, and we have prepared by drafting corners. We might even get some draft compensation if he signs a big enough deal.

that's offensive as hell

Posted

I don't really think that's offensive, that's the lifestyle that the great majority of professional athletes are propagating. Is it offensive to say that farmers spend all their money and time on tractors and in the field? Is it offensive to say that Hooker spends a lot time in hotel rooms?

I don't think those comments alone are offensive. They situation they portray is disappointing and I wish these athletes would smarten up and make their money work for them instead of giving it away to failed investments and women that were just looking for a meal ticket. The athlete worked so hard to get where they are and they just let it all slip away.

Williams made a major mistake by not taking that deal. He hasn't shown me much so far this preseason and he was offered $15 million for basically having one good (not great) year. I would have taken the contract.

Posted

who's lifestyle? what do you know about that man's lifestyle?

Because Im related to a former 10 year NFL veteran, closely related I might add, I know of and have seen the lifestyle.

Posted

Oh come now, their lifestyles are right out in public. From the Viking sex cruise to Ben's rapes to the mulitiple babies mommas. These guys are all trying to live the "gangsta" life. That's not offensive, that's what the majority of these guys are doing. Acknowledging the truth is by no means offensive. It's very disappointing and I would love to see it change cuz like I said before, these guys have worked to hard to have it ripped away from them like so many of them allow it to happen. That's why education is so very important. It's precious.

You guys can mock Cary William's quotes about getting financial security and putting money away for his daughter's tution but it I think it shows great foresight on his part to be thinking about post NFL life already. You guys see $15 Million and moan and groan because you are thinking about $15 mil in the context of your life. These guys have a higher cost of living and I don't think all of it is a result of just spending irresponsibly. A millionaire athelte is not going to have a 150K house in middle of town, not if they want any kind of privary or security. The cost of going out with friends is higher. If you go out with other players, he's doing more expensive things than just going to the bar. If he goes out with family he's probably always looked at to pay. So let's not sit here and act like $15 Mil to him is the same as $15 mil in our bank account (+ as Cleetz pointed out there are tax considerations). It is definitely a risk, and may turn out to be the wrong decision if he get's hurt or plays poorly, but I respect what he is trying to do and like the confidence he has in his ability. Hopefully it's a win win for him and the Ravens.

I would disagree that a vast majority of the players in the nfl want to live the gantsa life or do the gold chain 3 baby mama thing. I think you hear more about those players in the media so it's a sterotype people want to apply to the majority of players.

You could be right, but I really dont think so. Im ok with Williams taking a chance for a big payday. Life is about taking calculated risks.

As far as these guys blowing through their money......any way its sliced it should rarely happen. These guys can absolutely live with privacy. Theres a stanley cup winning goalie that lives in my small town in upstate ny. He doesnt get harrassed and he was very popular at one point. These guys allow people to insert themselves into their life and sponge off them. They encourage them to invest in faulty hedge funds and poor businesses. What does a football player know about hedge funds? These guys just need to insulate and protect themselves better than they do.
