vmax
I don't care how they do it but the 1st game of the season needs to be played here in Baltimore. The Ravens and Orioles have not been able to resolve a scheduling conflict that could force the Ravens onto the road for their Thursday Night Football season-opening game, per a league source. There is a tradition that the Super Bowl-winning team opens at home on Thursday night. That’s a desirable game for the champions because it’s a celebration of their season and allows for longer rest before their Week 2 game. The opener would be scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5, but the Baltimore Orioles, who play next door and share parking lots, also have a game slated for that night at 7:05 p.m. versus the Chicago White Sox.One option the league considered was for the Ravens to play on Wednesday night, but decided against it because that's the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah.http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Ravens-Season-Opener-In-Doubt/f6be6176-9494-4605-bb21-b465c52f1179 I don't know what Rosh Hashanah is other than a Jewish holiday, but I have sat in M&T Bank stadium on Christmas eve with no guilt whatsoever. The Ravens only have 8 home games a year. WORK IT OUT!!!!!! They just won the Super Bowl and are the top dog in town. Pay Angelos off.The Orioles haven't won anything in 30 years. YIELD! varaven45
Nothing is ever in easy when Peter Angelos is involved. I am sure he is looking for some dinero out of this deal. Maybe Flacco's agent can toss PA a few green feathers .LOL
oldno82
I want Angelos to just go away. He said he was going to get some players this off-season to keep last year's good feelings running. He did nada. Zilch. And now he wants to screw the Ravens. The thing I've never understood about the Orioles owner is, if he can't afford to spend money to improve the team why doesn't he just sell it? The O's should just move the game to a 12:05 start. oldno82
I tell you, Papa, I feel so negative towards Angelos I don't think there's anything he can do to change that opinion.
papasmurfbell
But look. During fan fest they had people buy the right to get autographs. They win for once in 14 yrs so they expect everyone to kiss the ring.
OutsideRzAcE
I don't blame Angelos or the O's for this. The NFL just needs to move the game to Wednesday. It make no sense to move the O's game to noon or midday, which would put the O's and White Sox players in a tough spot since on Wednesday night they play night games in Cleveland and New York respectively. This Rosh Hashanah excuse is BS. The NFL has played on that day before. They likely just don't want to get in the habit of having to move their marquee kickoff game since they had to do it last year as well. This is just about Goddell tying to get MLB and the O's negative publicity to try to pressure them into conceding.
papasmurfbell
Both teams will be in town about 1 am. So they can't play at 12:05?
dc.
A few things to clean up silliness here - and coming from a guy who hates Angelos as much as anyone. 1. Even if the O's moved the game to 12, it would hardly solve the issues. Playing a day game on a weekday is a traffic nightmare to begin with. You know the crowds would be down there for the Ravens by the time the O's ended too... no telling what happens if the O's game goes late for any reason. How do you handle parking, etc? 2. Angelos isn't holding this up - the article even says the O's are not worried about money, they are worried about MLB allowing any move. It just doesn't make sense to. 3. There is no reason the NFL cannot move the game to Wednesday. The line about the holiday is bull - we play on every major holiday every year, Christmas - New Years - Thanksgiving - Hannukah... who cares? 4. The buying autographs thing is just changing the topic. Fans around the league have had to do this forever; the O's held out longer. But they started charging a few years ago - it had nothing to do with winning last year. Secondly, it was a basic safety measure because the size of crowds in years past became crazy, even when the team was bad. Third, it was meant as an incentive to get kids autographs, I believe - kids had a free autograph zone, adults had to pay - and 100% of proceeds went to charity. It also ensured that if you stood in line, you got an autograph. In the past, had you stood in line, it could have closed before you got a signature and that angered more fans as they wasted time that could have been spent... waiting in another line! And by the by, Angelos hasn't promised any signings... another lie. In fact, the O's said expressly they WOULDN'T sell the whole thing out for one season, just like the Ravens this year. As a final note... while I love the honor of getting the first game of the season, I could really care less. Give the Ravens a couple extra Monday night games or something, but who gives a crap about being the first to play?
papasmurfbell
If the O's play early then it will be like openning day. The city will take the day off and I would bet you have a thur sell out. That is good for the O's and Sox. If they go long they will be to what 4-5 pm. That is 3-4 hrs before kickoff. Again no big deal. They go early and evryone makes out. Make it so the Ravens are on the road and alienate more fans form a team that needs desperately to build bridges instead of burning them. JPPT1974
Well usually the SB team winners have been opening day played at home. It is a tradition! Hopefully the Orioles and the Ravens will be figuring it out as it is a long way away!

cravnravn
They moved the opener this year due to the Democratic National Convention..And absolutely not a day/night game it would never work with parking. Folks start tailgating for Ravens games 5 to 6 hrs before kickoff.. We got screwed in 2001 with the opener, so this isnt "breaking news" Make the rest of the NFL start at 4 pm Sunday, let the Ravens be the only 1pm game. dc.
Papa... I think you need to work on your math. First, there's no argument that you can't have a day game on a weekday... the O's do it a few times a year and we live. But a day game on a weekday AND a Ravens game that night is insanity. If the O's start at 1, they play until 4 - maybe even later depending on various factors. At that point, you're only 5 hours from your proposed kickoff time. As Crav pointed out, that already puts you inside the tailgating window for most Ravens games. Frequently my friends have started tailgating for night games at 12 or 1 as it is. By 3-4 it can be packed. Even if you weren't in the tailgating window - say you could somehow promise that the Ravens fans wouldn't show until 5 - you still are relying on the O's ending by 4 and all fans (and staff?) being gone by 5 to allow the Ravens fans and staff in with time to spare? And doing all that, making the switch between O's fans leaving and Ravens fans entering, simultaneously, during rush hour... have fun. Don't forget, also, that many of the people who work games for one stadium - as ushers or vendors or ticket takers - do so at the other as well. So they have to be lumped in as well. And then you can add that all this would just plain be a pain in the ass for the O's and Sox. That is in many ways the least of the worries. But this horrible, imperfect, ridiculous plan fails on its own many times over - and then this still doesn't make things better for the O's in any way.
vmax
The NFL played games last year on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and the last. This is on the NFL...solely.There is no reason not to have the game Wednesday night.None.

By 3-4 it can be packed. They could easily have it so only Ravens parking permits are allowed in the lots that are shared. If you are only there for the O's then park in a garage. Most people will be downtown all day. I would bet 98 Rock has a bacon and Beer that morning downtown somewhere. They woudl have the concert at power plant live. I could see it that many people are parked by 10 am and don't move until 1 am.
cravnravn
Just not feasible Pops, dont get me wrong its a great idea, if Camden Yards was on 33rd St it would work. But when you have 2 venues that close, you know The ATM is a guaranteed sell out of 71,000+ and depending on the O's standings in Sept the attendance would be either 7,0000 or 30,0000. Either scenario is going to create gridlock for the City. Only way it could work is for OweMalley to declare a State & City paid Holiday, believe what you want but folks still have to work on game day, regardless if its opening day or not. papasmurfbell
It would be harder at Memorial Stadium. There is less parking and no light rail. Also if they shared a stadium then they have to get all the changes done in a few hours. That is impossible.
varaven45
Have it Friday NightHow about Saturday night? What a way to kick off the NFL season with a Saturday night tilt at M &T. Plus, It could offer a glimpse and another compelling argument for a future Saturday night Super Bowl ( I am tired of the Sunday night game ending around 11/00).
oldno82
You'd figure there'd be some way to change the game to Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday. I'm now believing this is an NFL issue, not really the Birds or Baseball's fault.
