A look at what Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has done when he had nine or more draft picks to work with

The NFL will soon reveal which teams will be awarded compensatory picks for free agents lost last offseason.

The Ravens are expected to receive three or four compensatory picks -- likely four -- which would bring their number of picks for next month’s NFL draft to 12. That’s a lot of ammo for general manager Ozzie Newsome should the Ravens choose to move up, down and all around or acquire more picks for next year’s NFL draft.

Since the Ravens arrived in Baltimore in 1996, they have gone into the draft with nine or more selections in five different years. They are expected to make it six this offseason. Their most draft picks was 12 in 1997.

Here is a refresher on what they did in each of those drafts:

1996: The Ravens entered this draft with 10 picks, including a pair of first-rounders after a deal with the San Francisco 49ers the previous year. Those first two picks turned out to be a pair of Hall-of-Famers in left tackle Jonathan Ogden and linebacker Ray Lewis. They drafted just seven players, though, including return specialist Jermaine Lewis. That’s because traded a second-round pick for tight end Harold Bishop, dealt away three picks to acquire another second-round pick (used on cornerback DeRon Jenkins), and traded a fifth-round pick for defensive tackle Reginald Jones. It was a busy first draft for Newsome in his first year in Baltimore.

1997: For a second straight year, the Ravens entered the draft with double-digit draft picks (12). Despite making three trades during the draft, the Ravens still ended up selecting 12 players, including outside linebacker Peter Boulware in the first round and inside linebacker Jamie Sharper and safety Kim Herring in the second.

2002: The Ravens came into this draft with 10 picks, including the No. 24 pick overall, eventually used to draft a rangy free safety from Miami named Ed Reed. After a pair of trades, the Ravens still ended up taking 12 players, including defensive end Anthony Weaver, punter Dave Zastudil and running back Chester Taylor.

2003: This time, the Ravens had 11 picks when the draft began. They took outside linebacker Terrell Suggs with the No. 10 pick overall. But they soon added another first rounder pick, No. 19 overall, in a trade with the New England Patriots, giving up their second-round pick and a future first-round pick so they could select quarterback Kyle Boller. The Ravens did not make another trade in this draft, coming away with an 11-man draft class that included outside linebacker Jarret Johnson, defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin, fullback Ovie Mughelli and offensive tackle Tony Pashos.

2008: In the first draft of the John Harbaugh era, the Ravens started the weekend off with 11 picks, including No. 8 overall. But after a pair of trades in the first round, the Ravens got quarterback Joe Flacco and additional picks. They traded back in the second round and still wound up with running back Ray Rice. And they sent a fourth-round pick to Oakland for cornerback Fabian Washington. The Ravens ended up drafting 10 players this year, including inside linebacker Tavares Gooden, safeties Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura and offensive tackle Oniel Cousins. Five years later, though, only Flacco and Rice remain on the team's roster.

So when I am for getting more and more picks why is it people are against it?

Because most of your proposed trades to get more picks are trades that wouldn't even work in Madden; do not take into account the CAP and bonus acceleration. Every team wants more picks. Nonetheless good article and Ozzie has a lot of opportunity this year.

Really? So when I said to trade a FA to come next yr that hurts the cap? So when I said to tag and trade that hurts the cap? I have not said to trade guys who are under long term deals. When you have silly teams make bad trades every yr but nobody would take a trade I would make. Sure Sure.

Right and that's the whole reason there is a RFA tender system, yet you do not see teams throwing long-term deals and draft picks for very good players. Now that Al Davis isn't running the Raiders, unless you are trading a QB or a disgruntled players, these trades do happen. Especially with the CBA restricting rookie contracts, a widening the FA pool, and limiting CAP growth, these trades are going to be increasingly more rare.

I hardly need to defend my position on your Madden trades proposed over the years, but I'll hear you out: on our current roster who would you trade for more draft picks?

But Papa it takes 2 to Tango. Just because you want to trade away some vets doesn't mean there is a crazy team wanting to throw picks at us to take those vets away.

Caus you have a habit of wanting to trade away our key people, you have to keep your foundation in tact, and trading away Joe or Rice, they are the footers of this team.

Crav,

Good point on Joe and Rice - two "O" cornerstones. We need to draft/acquire 2 cornerstones on D. Our teams future success is largely predicated on the FO's ability to acquire these cornerstones. Maybe Ozzie and Co cash in on this draft. Ozzies a bit overdue.

Oh its all about you again.....

Because your philosophy seems to be, and maybe you just explain yourself poorly, to trade all the players in their prime or close to it for younger players or picks. You advocate that for almost every player. You cannot win if you are always playing for the future. It might stop you from being horrible most of the time but it will also stop you from being great.

Trade certain players. Identify the guys you want to keep. Extend them early. Keep getting young talent that is cheap.

The Squealers have many more issues than RB.

Yeah but when you don't agree with the assessment of the team in those regards, or others on this forum, then that's where some of the disagreements start. Your post should be:

Trade certain players I think we should. Identify the guys I want the team I admit I am not even a fan of to keep. Extend them early. Keep getting young talent I like that is cheap.
