Report: Ravens “making progress” with Dennis Pitta
thundercleetz replied to papasmurfbell's topic in Baltimore Ravens
I would love to have Pitta back but he's already 29. We need to be smart here. However I have no doubt that he would have an enormous year under Kubiak. -
Yes you are correct on those numbers. Yes that is exactly how I see it, basically a two year deal that is hinging on Suggs rebounding. IMO it's unrealistic to think he'll be as good as he was first half of 2013, but it's also unlikely he'll be as bad as he was second half of 2013. If he can average out somewhere in between I think it will be a good deal for us.
-
How is it stupid? Two years and we can get out of the contract with the same ramifications as if we cut him today. Try to find another pass rusher we could get for four-years at $12M guaranteed. We could look to the draft, but then we could end up with another Upshaw or Kindle. This is a relatively safe and cheap option.

A little rash there on Ozzie one year off of a Super Bowl win and give straight playoff appearances. Let's see how last year's and this year's draft classes play out. I am not as inclined to think Suggs has lost it. My thought is he needs discipline. He gained considerable weight as last season went on. He also started pressing for sacks late in the year and started uncharacteristically blowing his run assignments. He was too polar opposite from the elite player the first half of last season and the bad player he was in the second half. If he averages out the next two or three seasons to something a little below the player we saw in the first half of 2013 then this is a good deal. I'm sure Ozzie had a talk with Suggs about discipline. Which is what the problem is here. If we continue to get an inconsistent player with flashes of brilliance then we cut him after two years and are exactly where we started today. For someone of his ability I think it's a good risk.

My hope with Suggs is something Preston suggested, put a weight clause in his contract. Suggs came out this year looking like the hulk and was a serious D-MVP contender the first half of the season. The second half of the season Suggs got more and more sluggish and had noticeably put on weight. Maybe Ozzie gave Suggs this extension because he realized he messed up on Boldin. Unlike Suggs, Boldin was coming off one of the best stretches of his career and showed this year he is still an elite player.

Haven't seen the breakdown of dollars per year but based on the signing bonus and the low cap numbers in 2014 & 2015 this is essentially a two/three year deal. After two years the dead money will be about $7.2M, which is the same as if he cut him this year. After three years the dead money drops to about $4.8M. Essentially this move will put us in the same situation with Suggs in two years. At that point will probably cut him and absorb the same amount of dead money that we'd take this year. Really just pushing back the dead money betting on two to three more good years of Suggs. I don't have a problem with doing these sort of deals with one year left on a current deal. My problem is if we did this for Suggs why didn't we do this for Boldin last year?
-
Ozzie never offered an extension only a pay-cut.
-
I hope someone asks why Ozzie didn't do the same thing with Bolden last season.
-
All depends on right player right price. Ozzie loves going after other teams' cap casualties, as they do not count against us being rewarded compensation picks. The Ravens received four compensation picks this year. So if we do go after a receiver it will be a cap casualty.

Gary Kubiak: We’ve got to get Ray Rice going

Great post. I definitely agree here. -

Great post. Exactly when I was getting at when I said someone should lock the thread. The thread started with an intelligent discussion but has regressed to name calling and insults. Nothing of value is being presented. -
Stay away from this guy. I heard interviews with him prior to the draft. Very cocky kid, no willingness to learn, thinks he's way better than he is.

What a shit show someone please lock this thread. -
I'll give Seattle credit when they actually pull the trigger and trade these guys. Until then they have simply been fortunate to draft well the past few years.
-
We have just a good a chance to move guys along and get more young players as Seattle. Sure they've drafted well the last few years but that's no guarantee they'll continue to hit. All it takes is a couple of their big FAs to leave and a couple of missed picks and they are right back down to earth with everyone else.

The whole idea that certain Flacco can't play in Kubiak's offense is ridiculous. How many "analysts" this last offseason said Nick Foles couldn't play in Chip Kelley's offense? Yeah how'd that work out? Good and creative coaches will best use their players talents. Flacco is a very talented player and I have no doubt Kubiak will adapt his offense around Flacco's talents. -
Can't be much worse than Hostler. I remember your assessment on Hostler and it reminded me of an interview with Brandon Stokley at the beginning of the season. He was surprised during receiving drills Raven receivers weren't being instructed to do something as simple as turn up field and finish out drills... With Engram at least he has current playing experience under a solid offense he can apply. I don't think Engram's production as a pro has a correlation with coaching ability. How many top coaches in the NFL today were elite players. Nonetheless Engram led the Seahawks in receptions the year they were NFC Champs. Engram may have not much coaching experience but he has put in his time with lower titles and is making the natural progression. What I'm banking on is the supervision of Kubiak and Dennison will elevate the receivers play.

Wow harsh...

I maintain, let's see how good the Seahawks are when Earl Thomas, Chancellor, Russell Okung, and Richard Sherman among other are all up for free agency at the same time Russell Wilson is asking for $200M with $70M guaranteed. Don't get me wrong the Seahakws did an OUTSTANDING job of building a team. All I'm saying is it's hard to get to the Super Bowl and they did not take it for granted. With the current cap I don't buy the dynasty talk just yet. As young as they are they are in the prime of their contention window these next two years. After that they are going to have to make some difficult choices against the cap which could make or break them. As does every young team.

When are we going to deal with these thugs

Haha I don't have a problem with Weiner. I thought it was entertaining. Howard Stern interviewed the girl and it was hilarious. -

Suddenly dick pics don't seem so bad... -
What makes you think he's shell shocked Max? You do make a good point that he might need some time off. However Kubiak actually acknowledged that point. During the presser he said it was good for him to take some time off after being fired midseason. Kubiak said he was driving his wife crazy at home and he's ready to get back to work!

Wow this is VERY exciting. Looks like the offense will be built from the ground up. Great to have a fresh start. For those trashing on Juan Castillo: Castillo is very highly respected as an offensive line coach. Even McKinney had good things to say about him after being traded, despite the success not being there. Castillo did excellent work in Philadelphia for years as their line coach. Last year there was simply miscommunication between Castillo and Caldwell/Hostler. Kubiak and Dennison are proven in the zone scheme, which should work well with what Castillo knows best. The best part is we are not done yet with this staff. Kubiak is going to have heavy influence on new coaches coming in. In the past our offensive staff has been a poor combination of coaches of different styles. This year we will have coaches who are of the same philosophy and have proven success working together. This is the best positioned for success the Ravens have ever been on offense. We have a right to be excited.

How funny would it be if they were named co-offensive coordinators?
