For those who were upset at the Baltimore Ravens offense this season, the line forms behind wide receiver Steve Smith.

He missed out on a $1 million incentive because the Ravens offense didn't improve from last season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. If Baltimore had gained 187 more yards this past season, Smith would've received a nice seven-figure retirement gift.

Smith's incentive kicked in if he participated in 60 percent of the offensive snaps and the Ravens' offense produced better numbers than 2015. Smith fulfilled the first part, playing in 63 percent of Baltimore's snaps. He fell short with the team offensive numbers.

It's amazing that the Ravens failed to increase their offensive output from the previous season. In 2015, Baltimore started four quarterbacks (Joe Flacco, Matt Schaub, Jimmy Clausen and Ryan Mallett) and lost leading rusher Justin Forsett, top receiver Steve Smith and starting left tackle Eugene Monroe to injuries. The Ravens still managed to produce 5,749 yards, which ranked No. 14 in the NFL.....http://www.espn.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/33067/steve-smith-has-one-million-reasons-to-be-upset-for-ravens-offense-not-improving

Yards!!?!

How about POINTS!

i like the idea of team incentives vs personal incentives but how about something that translates into winning.

The Ravens were 21st in points scored in the NFL.

The Ravens were 21st in points scored in the NFL.

So this is why they weren't very good, they were trying to keep Smith from that bonus :)

Whoever on ESPN that pointed that out, it is true. Much better team this past season then last. We keep cutting the OC and we all bitch about the Oline coach but for the most part one thing stays the same.

Here's more about scoring points...

Baltimore has played in 44 games decided by one score over the last four seasons -- the most of any team in the NFL -- and has gone 20-24 in those games. That means 73 percent of the Ravens' losses since hoisting up the Lombardi Trophy have been by eight points or less.

"We have to build a football team that is not in so many close games," Harbaugh said. "We have to be able to score enough points where we're winning by 10, 14, 21, 24 points. Then, if we're in four, five or six close games, if we win three or four or five of those, now you're looking at the kind of season that you really want to have. That's what we're shooting for. That's what we're working for. That's where we have to go."

The Ravens' 2016 season was derailed by these close games. Baltimore went 6-6 in games decided by eight points or less, but it's more exasperating when you look at the moments that cost the Ravens.

One can argue that the Ravens were an 8-8 team instead of a playoff one because of a stalled fourth-quarter drive, a game-turning fumble, a collision between teammates and, of course, a few inches....http://www.espn.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/33089/how-can-ravens-improve-next-season-more-points-less-al-pacino

Hensley uses 4 games as examples of how the Ravens had excellent opportunities to win but blew it.

Since Joe can't seem to carry the team, the best strategy would be to surround him with real playmakers. A running back like Elliott, or a receiver like Beckham, or, preferably both. Joe needs help to make it so that his average performances are good enough.

It has to take a lot of people in the offense to make it work.
