Despite their record the O's have been fun to watch this year. They a building, players are arriving and developing and a core is emerging.

Hard to believe but true.............very inspiring....

Mo, an Orioles and Ravens superfan who spent most of his 14 ½ years battling cancer, was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame the same day he died, honored as the recipient of the Wild Bill Hagy Award. During Mancini’s time in Baltimore, he and Mo grew close. Mancini slumped through 2018′s first half, then spent the All-Star break with Mo, an experience that offered perspective about his on-field struggles. After earning Most Valuable Oriole honors the next year, he hosted the Purple Tailgate to support Mo that offseason.

When Mancini received his own diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer in March 2020, he thought about how Mo always handled his battle: with radiant positivity and a desire to make each day a win.

“I thought about Mo a lot all day,” Mancini said Wednesday. “I can’t believe it’s been a year since we lost him, just with his energy and his happiness and the happiness that he brought to others. It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long. I miss him every day.”

Yea...and they squeaked out a 4-3 win over Detroit tonight. Harvey pitched great (don't know what to make of him), Severino and Montcastle homered...

I like the offense they are building. I like the college pick first rounder. It might only take him a year or so. Leave Adley and all the pitchers down this year and next year might be fun.

The following funner!

  O's bash NY in 'most complete game of year'

López's 6 strong innings backed by Orioles' 4 HRs at Yankee Stadium   :gorave:

Quote

on Monday, the Orioles did something they hadn't done in the stadium in recent memory: the Birds brought out the boos in the home crowd. In the process, they also spoiled the home debuts of Joey Gallo, Anthony Rizzo and -- especially -- Andrew Heaney with their 7-1 win over the Yankees. “For me, that was our most complete game of the year, in all phases,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “It felt different because we got a big-time start and we scored some runs early. We have a tough time scoring runs here usually. This is a major payroll team with superstars and guys who make a ton of dough, for a reason. So it’s a tough place to play.”...Orioles beat Yankees behind Jorge López, 4 HRs (mlb.com)

The 2021 O's have a lot of" feel good" storylines so I haven't lost interest this year. Yet we have to remember: the O's have 2,500 to 1 odds of winning the World Series. :fishin:

Chris Davis retires. $161 million up in smoke.

Yeah in retrospect it really was but they had to sign him, It just didn't work out. With the teams reputation for being cheap (often undeserved IMO - NOT that I am saying it was a well run club) and with Davis's production and popularity they team would have been skewered if they let him walk. Of course the same people skewered the team for the signing when his production went away.

He seemed like a good guy and was the main reason to watch the club for a few years. He averaged 37 home runs over a 6 year span, that's crazy. Being suspended for the playoffs the one season might have really hurt, but mostly he was fun for a while. I hope he has a good retirement and post baseball life.

No they didnt.  After 2012 he had his best yr.  We had seen he was streaky to that point and 2012 was the aberration.  Also that yr Wiet had not started breaking down.  That was the yr to put but on the market and maximize value.  I said just that here at the time.

Also the O's bid against themselves to keep Davis.  I am so glad Elias is running things now bc he seems to have a much firmer grasp on what talent is worth.

From wait florio.

Orioles #1 prospect Adley Rutschmann   (MLB'S #1 prospect for that matter) has played a combination of carcher, first base, and DH this season. Catcher is the most important position on a baseball team because the catcher not only hits but is responsible for managing the entire pitching staff on the field.  Here is how the teams  Rutschmann has played for this year (Bowie and Norfolk) have had their pitching perform in games Rutschmann catches vs games he has not caught.  This post gives the team game # and stats of starting pitcher in that game as well as final score of the game

Games Rutschmann catches

35-19 (.648 winning  %)

Team gives up 4.2 runs per game

Starters pitched 222.2 innings (4.1 innings per start average)

Starters gave up 94 earned runs (3.80 ERA)

Starters gave up 185 hits (7.4 hits per 9 innings pitched)

Starters gave up 86 walks (3.5 walks per 9 innings pitched)

Starters have a 1.22 WHIP

Starters have 294 strikeouts  (11.9 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched)

Games Rutschmann does not catch

16-14 (.533 winning %)

Team gives up 5.1 runs per game

Starters pitched 131.2 Innings (4.2 innings per start average)

Starters gave up 46 earned runs (3.14 ERA)

Starters gave up 108 hits (7.4 hits per 9 innings pitched)

Starters gave up 52 walks (3.6 walks per 9 innings pitched)

Starters have 1.22 WHIP

Starters have 154 strikeouts  (10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched)

Starters have pretty similar stats in hits, walks, and WHIP in games Rutschmann starts vs games he does not. Starters strike out an extra batter and a half in games Rutschmann starts though. Couple that with the team giving up just about a whole run more in games he does not start at catcher (despite Starters ERA being slightly lower in games he does not start) and factor in that they have a much better winning % when he does catch compared to when he does not and  it shows that Rutschmann has an ability to manage the whole staff well (including bullpen arms which  is super important in minor leagues with every pitcher on extreme pitch counts) and the strikeout rates show he can get pitchers calls they need on close pitches with his pitch framing to bring in the strikeouts.

And, at some point, the Orioles have got to stop being baseball’s human pinata with the sixth-longest losing streak in modern-baseball history.

The new collective bargaining agreement may not immediately change the zoning laws between the haves and have-nots, but unless something is done to at least bring a semblance of competitive balance, there won’t be a reason to even watch baseball in half of the markets after the All-Star break.

When there are teams like the Orioles not even attempting to win, with a current 18-game losing streak and on pace to lose 112 games, there’s a huge competitive problem.

How fair is it that Tampa Bay is 15-1 against the Orioles this year and the White Sox are 7-0, but 11 teams haven’t had the opportunity to play them this year?
