Flacco is part of Ravens' growing problems

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden was right that these Baltimore Ravens aren't the Ravens of old. You can start with the fact that quarterback Joe Flacco, one of the remaining pieces of last year's championship season, isn't the Flacco of old.

Flacco is getting paid to be an elite quarterback. He obviously isn't playing like one. The disturbing part is he doesn't play with the same confidence he carried in the Ravens' Super Bowl run earlier this year, which is one of the reasons why the Ravens looked lifeless at times in a 24-18 loss at FirstEnergy Stadium and why the defending champions are in a midseason free fall.

While this was the epitome of a total team meltdown, Flacco played a major role in his first loss in 12 meetings with the Browns. He sleepwalked through the game's first 29 minutes. He struggled to throw the ball deep. And he didn't show any killer instinct in the final seconds of the game.

This wasn't just a problem in Cleveland, where he was outplayed by a journeyman quarterback. This has been the case for week after painful week.

"It's obviously frustrating we just haven't been good enough," Flacco said.

Now Mikey chimes in

The answer to one of the biggest questions about the 2013 season is almost clear now.

Did Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco earn the $120.6 million contract he signed during the offseason? Absolutely. Can he carry a team? No.

If he could, the Ravens would have beaten the Cleveland Browns here Sunday, especially following the bye week. Instead, the Ravens lost and looked like other Super Bowl champions that won and then faded for a year or two after the title.

Its a team game and Joe is a team guy. He never was and will likely never be able to "carry" a team like the Rodgers, Brady's of today.

Just watch Joe's contemporary in Atlanta. The critics are piling on Matty Ice with his recent performance (and loss of players).

Bottom line, Joe is a very good, not great, QB. Nor more no less. Get him a decent or at least serviceable line, a few WRs & TE, some continuity, he would and

will continue to play well. Not great, just very good.

Unfortunately articles like these will fuel the Flacco haters fire, Our problems go far deeper than the QB

No they don't, our number one problem is paying an above average qb , great qb money, therefore not having enough talent around the above average qb for him to be successful, BTW lets get Incognito in here next year.

Hey Troy Smith! Shouldn't you be game planning for your next match with the Montreal Alouttes? You can't make the coin Flacco makes if you're on here all the time...just saying...

Could you define exactly what a Flacco hater is?

I guy who loses his starting job because of a sore throat then proceeds to not cut it throughout the league and pursues a career in Canada.

Oh yeah, and someone who can't argue the failings of the 2013 Ravens without saying it all falls on Flacco. You realize this is a team sport, right? Flacco isn't perfect, but it's a group effort. When he's rushing more than our highly paid RB, well maybe there's more blame to go around...

Their OL was supposed to be a strength this year. They were supposed to have two pro-bowl caliber guards and two rock solid tackles. Monroe is rock solid, but that's all they have. Everyone else has been horrendous. Our OL is literally turning out to be one of the worst all-time in the NFL.

Yesterday was a bad day for Joe, no denying that. The line sucked too.

Joe is not good enough to carry a team with a suspect line and zero running game. Few QBs are.

Our line is much worse than suspect and no QB is good enough to succeed with what's here. Every successful team knows to put a quality OL in front of a franchise QB. Ozzie thought they had done so. He was wrong. Osemele hasn't been right all year and now he's done. Yanda hasn't been right all year. I think he's been hurt a little by the loss of Birk, but I also think he hasn't fully recovered from his shoulder surgery. Oher has been simply awful. Gino isn't ready.

you sure do care an awful lot about a qb that hasn't been on the team in years. Is this your defense for Flacco, he's better than Troy Smith, the depths the groupies stoop to.

I would have traded him for Nick Foles.

1 game does not make a solid career. Take the picks. This yrs QB class looks quite good. Also 2015 gets you the FSU QB.

That is why paying a QB that much who can't carry a team is insane.

I think a few on here need a little reminder:

Vinny Testaverde, Eric Zeier, Jim Harbaugh, Scott Mitchell, Stoney Case, Tony Banks, Trent Dilfer, Randall Cunningham, Elvis Grbac, Chris Redman, Jeff Blake, Anthony Wright, Kyle Boller, Steve McNair and Troy Smith.

You don't go back to this when you have found a QB that has been a starter all 5 years in the league and never missed a game. You don't go back to this when under your current QB, your team has never missed the playoffs, has won at least one playoff game every year, played in the AFCCG 3 times and won a Superbowl.

You pay this QB, because if you don't, you know that another team (with a list as bad as the one above, if not worse) sure as shit will pay him.

Who said you have to go back to that. That is doing just because of fear. Go in and take control and shift the paradigm.

Trading a QB for picks just after he won the SB and after his sucessful 5 first seasons is insane and you know it. The Ravens would be a laughing stock if they did that. Again, not a big Joe fan but thats really a stupid stupid statement and I think you know it. Youre an ass, but I dont often think you are stupid.

Maybe not your market value, but the market value for the position dictated his salary. Plenty of other QBs in his price range cannot soley carry a team by themselves. Few can.
