Signing Hill is just plain stupid

Recommended Posts

The Ravens speak "with forked tongue".

They say they want and get high character men....then they lead the league in arrests and fuck ups this off season.

Then they sign this fuck up....

One day after the Ravens’ Ray Rice was given a mere two-game suspension by the NFL as punishment for knocking his now-wife unconscious at an Atlantic City, New Jersey casino, the team is opening its doors to one of the most unruly players in the league.

They announced Friday that they’ve signed former Giants safety Will Hill. Hill was cut by the Giants in May after violating the league’s substance abuse policy for a third time. He appealed and lost a six-game suspension.

“If we need it, Will will provide depth in the middle of the season,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said, according to the Baltimore Sun.

But do they need it this badly? Badly enough to overlook Hill’s insistence on smoking marijuana, despite the work-related consequences?

He was suspended in college at Florida for testing positive for marijuana, and entered the draft early. He was suspended from the Giants four games in 2012 for using a performance-enhancing drug, and four more in 2013 for marijuana. He’ll miss six games this season. He’s talented, yes, but he’s also unreliable and self-destructive. His actions indicate he cares little about his own success, not to mention the team’s.

This from his former Giants teammate, Antrell Rolle, in June: “Will knew the situation he put the Giants in and he forced their hand. For him to keep moving himself in the wrong direction, it’s not a good thing.”

Still, perhaps the 115 career tackles, two interceptions and three forced fumbles in two seasons were too much for the Ravens to overlook.

And maybe they dismissed his other off-field issue. He reportedly trashed the house he was renting in New Jersey, causing $15,000 in damages. He and his buddies left the house infested with maggots, holes in the wall, dog feces from his four pit bulls and more.

“If this is your job and you’re willing to jeopardize your job for some other reason, then perhaps you don’t have your mind and priorities where they should be in the first place,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said upon releasing Hill.

So, what do the Ravens see that Coughlin and the Giants did not? Every coach feels like he can fix a player, somehow redeem him and succeed where others could not. That coach could be John Harbaugh. Rice punched his wife with an uppercut and dragged her out of an elevator. Five Ravens players were arrested over the course of the offseason. It's an ugly picture all around.

It just became more puzzling with the Hill signing. On the heels of the Rice public relations debacle, it looks even worse.http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2014-07-25/will-hill-signs-baltimore-ravens-suspension-failed-drug-tests-ray-rice-two-games-hitting-wife

Their team image just took another blow.

They will be another 10 years cleaning this mess up.

I can usually see the reasoning behind their moves. Even with Ross being lost for the season, this move makes no sense. People who have been through what he currently is going through, addiction, have said Gordon should step away from football for a while to get his life together. Seems the same should be said for Hill, who clearly has an addiction not just to pot, but to his former life style and long time friends who continue to lead him astray.

What do you think Mike?

-The Ravens signed former New York Giants safety Will Hill, who has been suspended three times for violating the NFL’s drug policy, including having to sit out six games to start this season.

He’ll fit in fine on the current Ravens roster.

Pretty revealing quote: says a lot about our current free safety situation outside of Hill. Think we have our new starting FS.

Since his arrival, Hill has been impressive enough that Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees has lamented that the former New York Giants starter is suspended for the first six games for his third violation of NFL drug policies.

"[i wish] he was eligible for the first game," Pees said. "I'll tell you what: That guy is really a good, good football player. He's big, he's fast, smart and been great in the classroom. You talk about a guy coming over from another team catching on.

"Day One, he walked out there and kind of knew what was going on just from sitting in the classroom taking notes and getting back in the playbook and seeing what we have. He's an impressive guy.

Elam is a SS.

Yes, I know, one who has a habbit of being late & out of position. That is why Pees wants Hill in there, some experience to guide Elam. Two young safeties back there was their idea before camp started, obviously with this signing and Pees's comments, things are not working out. I guess we find out more as the games start.... Good thing there are four preseason games, this team is going to need them...

Elam was playing FS last yr. So if you take that out of the equation where have you seen him play SS poorly?

Are you serious? It doesn't matter if he was to play ss or fs, the fact remains, he was late getting into position and or out of position many, many times. His suppsed coverage ability came into question numerous times last year. He struggled with the concepts of the defense all last year and now we have the team signing not only another safety (who can play either) but one with a troubled past who is being suspended for six games this year, one more issue and he will be gone for a long time.

Add to that, this player, who came from another team, has picked up the defense quickly, so much so, the DC pointed him out. This speaks volumes to both current young safeties that they need to pick things up. Come on papa, you are smarter than this....

I agree with papa, not really the impression I get. I think more so Pees is concerned with the fact that the third corner position has been so bad that Darian Stewart has had to fill in at the third corner spot with Jeremy Miles taking over at FS. Don't think his comments had much to do about Elam.

I think it was loud & clear to the entire secondary...
