Preston: It’s time for the Ravens and Lamar Jackson to part ways

The Chiefs are starting to feel the pinch, letting a player they traded for, even tagged in the past walk now because he has earned the right to big money.

The Ravens have a good young group, a restructure here or there keeps then in decent cap shape.

But as we have talked about before here, the league had to do something about these $40 mil per year salaries. Even by drafting well, it is not sustainable

I don't see them as bottom dwellers. This is too good a roster. The D and ST's are excellent. Running game excellent. They were 5-11 in 2015 (their worst in the last 10 years) and 8-8 in 2016.

Now without a franchise QB, it's hard for me to say they can be serious contenders. They'd be average.

Mike Wilbon, a man I respect, one who I've enjoyed reading over the years and listening to, on his thoughts when asked about teams saying they have no interest in Lamar; "Tony, teams know what the Ravens offered, they know it was Not $120 (mil), not $140 (mil) but probably north of $180 (mil) in guarantees. Yes they are wealthy enough owners, but that doesn't mean they are wealthy enough to say yeah, we're wealthy enough to go north of $200 (mil) just because Cleveland did it." /quote

As for me, I am sure some of these same teams will call Lamar, just to do their due diligence, that some of this is draft posturing, to keep those draft quarterbacks and price of those high draft picks, high...

An excellent article on this debacle as some would call it..

https://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/lamar-jackson-ian-rapoport-variety-different-ways-contract

By the time the NFL franchise tag deadline passed Tuesday afternoon, Lamar Jackson had been placed on the non-exclusive tag by the Ravens, and Daniel Jones and the New York Giants had reached an agreement on a contract extension.

Jackson is set to earn $32.4 million next season, while Jones' average annual salary will be $40 million over the next four years.

The contrasting outcomes prompted the following knee-jerk reaction on social media: How is it possible that a 26-year-old former NFL MVP didn't receive a long-term, lucrative contract but a quarterback with a significantly less impressive resume did?

Well, Lamar might be trying to make a case to be highly paid, but the Ravens tried numerous times to make him one of the highest paid. So let us be honest Lamar..

Lamar Jackson has broken his silence amid his contract and franchise tag showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

The 26-year-old former MVP quote-tweeted a statistic from Hard Rock Sportsbook, which listed Jackson in a group of legendary quarterbacks that started their careers with a 96-plus passer rating and over 100 touchdowns in their first 61 career starts – Patrick Mahomes, Dan Marino, Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson.

I really hope the Commandos make a run at Lamar. He might be the piece that draws more money for the sale of the team.

Ravens might get 2 1st and Sam Howell, who, in my opinion, would be great in Todd's system here, plus cheap, still on his rookie deal. Big, strong, accurate, great pocket presence, and yes, he can run.

This would be a win-win for both teams. Take one of the firsts, get the wide out you need. Use the other to get more draft picks or also get Ringo. Man, a guy can dream, right 😀

Food for thought. Because of the contract Watson got, the Browns were 12 or so mil over the cap. They, he and the team, agreed to a void year added and gave him more bonus money, lowering his cap hit this year, saving them some 20 or so mil in cap space, now they are 34 mil under.

Problem, after this year, for the next 3 years, his cap hit will exceed $60 mil 🤐🫨

Yep, I guess will know a lot more, or have a lot more rumors, Wednesday.

BTW, is there anything that would prevent a team from tagging, matching an offer sheet and then trading a player to the team that wanted him for more than 2 first round picks?

It has to be two firsts, at the least. Yes, they, the Ravens can work out a sign and trade, for more than 2 1sts, but not less.

Actually the Ravens can trade a signed player for what they want.  More than likely Lamar will leave for less than 2 firsts.  Someone will come to Eric and say lets deal.  If the tagged player signs an offer sheet and the ravens dont match its the 2 firsts and only that.

More on what Lamar turned down last year, from Shefty..https://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2023/3/14/23639469/schefter-lamar-jackson-turned-down-200-million-guaranteed-deal-back-in-september-nfl-qb-news

More information surrounding the contract offered to quarterback Lamar Jackson back in September has been reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on The Adam Schefter Podcast. According to reports, Jackson turned down a deal with $200 million in guaranteed money

Chris Mortensen and I reported on this last September when Lamar Jackson was offered a deal that he turned down. A deal that included at the time he was offered $133 million due at signing,” Schefter said. “$133 million guaranteed. The contract also had injury guarantees that brought the guarantees to $175 million and it then had a springing guarantee that could’ve brought the value for the contract, the guaranteed money of the contract to $200 million in guarantees... and yes, those were the actual numbers and that was the situation. So those really were the guarantees for Lamar Jackson.
